  • Smokes at Elevation

I have a 2L-TE that runs great below 3000 feet elevation. It belches black smoke above 3000 feet. It smokes with or without the turbo, although there is less smoke when the turbo light is out. As soon I get closer to sea level it does not smoke at all.

Is there some sensor that compensates for the thinner air that may be not working? The engine still had plenty of power at the higher elevations, it just smoked.

I am new to the Toyota diesel world and any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Makes sense that the mixture gets richer as the altitude increases although 3000 ft doesnt sound that high. Only thing I can think of is that the engine is running a bit rich anyway - just not enough to show lower down. So check the usual things for smoke - (1) renew air filter, (2) have injectors checked/serviced (3) injector timing. The ECU will be monitoring air temperature only and predicting volume based on density variations due to temperature only. It doesnt measure ambient pressure as far as I know although turbo pressure does affect fuel flow so perhaps that ought to compensate. I'm rambling a bit now so just check the usual things first I think..
