  • what else can i do!!!

right then girls and boys. . .

Had my 2.4TD for a while now, after the spectacular head cracking incident it was replaced and fine for a little while and runs fine round town and on the motorway but every time i come to a big hill (live in devon so there are plenty) the temp starts to climb and i have to stop to allow it to cool.

was out green laning with locals again the other week and it happened again, this time noticed two small tiny cracks on the header tank while we were waiting for it to cool so decided to get the rad taken out and recon.

So. . .rad out, cracks sorted, rad steam cleaned, flushed, air con rad and pipes removed and left in garden, flow checked and new stat and rad cap later. . . .and it STILL gets too hot up big hills!

what else can i do to get this sorted!!!

    help me please!!

Is the viscous coupling on the fan working correctly? If the fan is slipping more than it should then you won't be getting the right air flow, particularly as you slow down up hills.

anyone know how I can wire the electric fan to come on if I want it too? sitting in traffic or at bottom of long hill etc etc, might stop the viscous fan coming on so often and draining my power and Mpg!
Perhaps a 2 or 3 way switch for on with temp (as it is now)/ perm ON.

          Cheers

On the front of the thermostst housing there is a plug with a wire headind off towards the A/C pump. Pull this plug off while motor is running and see if your a/c fan works, I assume you have a front mount a/c fan??.
This wire works on an earth loss. From here you can decide how you wnt to do your switching.
My system is a little more complex but the basis is that if you interupt this wire then the fan comes on.

I was having this problem on my 2.4 for a while after Langdale. First thing I did was to wash the mud/debris out of the radiator fins and straighten the bent fins on the rad (about a quarter of the fins in the ATX cooling bit of the rad were bent flat). This made an improvement but it still wasn't too good, so I changed the oil in the viscous fan coupling. I now hear when the viscous fan engages. The electric auxilliary fan is not having to work so hard now.

I can now drive up Ivinghoe Hill at a fair lick without the temp guage moving off the normal position.

I hope you get it sorted out because it is worrying especially on a 2.4
                It's only a hobby!

i might just put the fans off the aircon rad and the bash plate back on, if i can switch them manually...
there is on here a mod for putting a bleed valve in the heater hose to let air locks out. i made one of these but used a drain plug with a hose fitting. now i can jublee clip the hose pipe on here, and flush the lot while drinking tea.... nice..and no airlocks!

thanks for all the repsones guys!

in answer to a couple of questions. . .

                      1. yes - the electric fan does come on when it gets hot but it still seems to get too hot too quick when any kind of hill is involved.

                      2. erm - i think the viscous fan is working ok, it spins! when the engine is cold it is hard to rotate it by hand, but when it is warm/hot and i turn off, it is then mucher easier to spin it

                      is this normal?!

im just rapidly losing patience with this thing, i assumed when i had the head done that would be the end of my problems with temp

Im almost at the stage where i want to get rid of it but i love the car and ive had the head done so i dont think its worth selling, i just want it fixed! besides its all scratched and bashed cos i use it as mr T intended and its out greenlaning and offroading almost every weekend!

BTW check out www.poopheads.co.uk for my pics! itll be easy to find my 4x4 pics!

                      thanks

You should have an electric fan in front of the rad too, that is the one that comes on when the viscous one can't cut it. That should switch on if you disconnect the plug like Simono says.

I've just got back from playing with Garath's truck, put 100km on it after fitting a Stevo head, and altering the viscous fan. I've fitted a proper temp gauge, the motor runs at 83-90 round town and cruising, its at abot 95-98 at 75 on upslopes on the motorway, and nearly 100 is you do 80 uphills. Have found that the front fan comes on a 100 deg, exactly! Can't get it any hotter than that. (which is good!!! )

Heaters not very hot, but the hose going into it and out of are, so I think its plugged, which isn't good for Garath as the garage I rescued the truck from fitted him a new one!?!

I did indeed know I had an electric fan up front but I thought he was saying disconnect my air con rad fans underneath which is what confused me, ill pull the lead sometime soon to see
