  • tachometer questions

    Hi all,

I've got a 1989 Toyota 4x4 pickup truck -- Hilux just about everywhere else except the US.

The 22RE petrol engine that's in it is about to die, and I'm planning to swap in a 2LII-T 2.4 diesel engine that I've got on order. That engine was never available here in the US, although it's a bolt-in replacement for the 22RE. (in fact, no Toyota trucks with diesel engines were available here after 1985). Engine mounts, transmission bolt pattern, etc are all the same.

There are a few challenges for this swap, but I think I've got most of them sorted out at this point. The one thing that I don't have a good solution for is the tachometer. The petrol tach in my truck will not work with the diesel RPM pickup on the injection pump. One thought is just to get a diesel tachometer from some place in Europe or Australia. Here's a picture of my instrument cluster:

Can someone with a 2.4D truck tell me if it looks like the diesel tachometer mechanism will fit in my instrument cluster? Also, are the markings roughly the same? Even if the diesel tach fits, it won't do me any good if the markings don't line up.

    Thanks!

The instrument facia in the 2.4 diesel is exactly the same as the one in the photo, except the tachometer red line starts at 4750 rpm.

Smart looking truck by the way!

That's really good news. Anyone know a place that would be willing to ship a diesel tach to the US? Hopefully I can get just the tach without the whole instrument cluster to save on shipping...

Actually, it's the mechanism behind the facia I'm looking for. The diesel tach uses an inductive pickup in the injection pump, and I believe my petrol tach gets its reading from the spark ignition system, so they are not compatible.

But it looks like I might need the facia as well. Looking at your gauges, I see that the diesel tach has a full travel of 0-6000 rpm, while the petrol tach in my truck goes from 0-8000 rpm. So if I were just to swap the mechanisms, the number that the needle points to won't be accurate unless I also swap the facias.

Try posting in the Parts Wanted section. The full cluster is not a heavy item, so postage wont be that bad. Also look in the Spares for sale, there are some breakers in there. Good luck,
            Pete
