  • price buster- kerosene substitute?

    Hello folks,
Someone i know reckons he is paying approx 28p per litre after mixing a tank of kerosene with a litre of oil. He has only just started using it in his 3.1 Patrol but says a friend of his has been running his daihatsu for 6 years in this fashion.
Sounds too good to be true so i thought i'd ask the experts here.
    What's the score chaps?

When I worked with planes I know a lot of the diesel owners were using 50/50 Kero/Diesel
There were some who were making "homebrew" fuel like you are talking about.
We had access to free fuel (kero) I am unsure of the oil type to use and the exact quantity, but I can tell you that JetA1 kero smells a lot different diesel exhaust

Kero & other mixes are usually acceptable as short term emergency use fuels, but deffo not reccomended for longer term use, you may get away with it, but again you may be unlucky. I have one mate who recently had his Mazda 323's fuel pump expire following a year or so of using a diesel/Jet A1 mix.

The trick is what fuel to actually mix. Diesel is 32 second, heating oil is 28 second rated. You can mix it up to 25% with no adverse effect, and put a little 2-stroke mix in with it to help lubricate the pump.

I know of one person who's been running his escort van on heating oil 100% for the last 4 years and it STILL hasn't blown!

Bear in mind that HM Customs & Excise also share an interest in these activities and they have powers of confiscation and fines that PC Plod can only dream of. Heating oil, kerosene, marine diesel, red diesel, used chip shop oil and Lidl Sunflower oil etc- if you haven't paid the right Duty beware!
