    Can anyone shed some light on a fuse problem..I noticed about a 32nd of a inch crack in the 80amp glowplug fuse so proceded to get it replaced but had not have any problems to speak of regarding starting.. getting the fuse out was tricky but when i replaced it with a new one.. and started up a sort of dash board panel light surge and then all seemed as normal. ok.. but thinking this was odd i had a look at the new fuse and low and behold it had a break in it.. so in fact i was back to square 1 but its running ok starts ok..any suggestions..may the fuse be with you..     Did you check both the original fuse and the replacement fuse were not blown.
    What you describe sounds like a short circuit which because of the load appears to dim the panel lights momentarily until the fuse blows. As the weather is warm it may be that there is a fault on the glow plug circuit which is blowing the fuse but your truck is starting ok anyway.
    Check the fuses with a multimeter - if they are blown you have a fault on the glow plug circuit. Does the glow light still light on the dashboard ?

    You need to let the forum know which Surf it is you have, ie. 2.4lt, 3lt, Surf or 4Runner etc. Post the truck details on your profile then you won't need to do it again.

      i had exact same problem on my 91 2.4.the fuse kept blowing and what a pig to get at.anyway it turned out to be the blue plastic insulator had cracked and a bit of it had come away. underneath the glow plug terminals on inlet manifold on further investigation the glow plug bar was touching the manifold.hope this helps.

        Yep.That's where the problem will almost certainly be.Check the insulators and wiring in this area.The insulators should be isolating the glow plug rail from the manifold.They need to be assembled the right way to do this.

          yup - insulatore put on wrong way on one of the plugs on mine - replaced it = working fine now

            Oh NO !!! Not the Blue Insulator thingy again !!
            Very common problem
            I don't have a blue one anymore as I ended up making some new ones that will not crack or give me any $hit again.

                Thanks vatchman will check it out wierd how even with fuse blown it still starts

                      The others are almost certainly right about the fault being on the insulators. The glow plugs are fed via an 80a fuse through the glow relay. The glow light on the dash is seperately fused.

                        Hi silversurfer..I think this is the problem..I just dont get how it would start if this fuse is broken, yet it starts ok and runs well but the fuse is broken, or is this function only significant in cold weather? just need to know....does this fuse also feed anything else??

                          The 80a fuse supplys only the glow plugs via a relay. The glow plugs are really only necessary for starting in very cold conditions. If your truck is in otherwise good nick regarding the injectors/fuel supply etc it should start OK.
                          You may notice a small amount of smoke on initial starting without the glowplugs but that is just unburnt fuel from the initial start.

                          The attachment is a schematic wiring diagram for the engine - may help make it a bit clearer.

                            Yep.They will start without the glow plugs working.This can vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on condition of engine.If you had a worn engine with low compression then it may not start.The 80 amp fuse is only for the glow plugs.

                              Thanks Silversurfer that clears it up,, would the fact that I had new glow plugs a while back fitted by my local garage, would the problem be down to them fixing it, or is it something I could fix myself? if so please would you advise..Thanks Shiny
