  • Am i the youngest surfer? Just bought one!

    Hello!

    Just purchased my first surf.
    Its a 2.4 TD SSR-X 1993, im only 21, am i the yongest surfer?

I have a couple of questions about the car that dont seem to be in the manual.

Firstly is there any way of opening the boot without using the button inside the cab?

What does the small switch to the right of the steering wheel do? when i press it, the revs go up a bit on their own, press it again, they go back.

How easy is it to fit a kit to change my speedo to mph instead of kmh?

What is best to use? the hard or soft suspention setting? i cant realy tell the difference.

I would also appreciate any tips on keeping the fuel consumption down, particulaly on motorways trips.

Im sure there will be many more questions to follow,
    any help much appreciated.

    Many Thanks

    Tim

    Hey Tim
you maybe joint yougest as iam 21 and have just bought my Surf ssr-g 93 and iam lovin every minute of drivin.
i still have a lot to learn but i will answer what i know.
to open the boot, stick the key in the tailgate lock and twist and hold to left of right to open/close.
The idle up button to the right of steering wheel is for cold morning warm up and/or when yur using a winch of somthing like that.
I find hard good for B roads and short trips, soft for offroad and motorways (feels like sitting in truck cab on motorway)
As for fuel consumpsion i found sticking to 65mph keeps it down a lot on the motorways. yea i no its slow but if u go any faster it will prob. blow the engine anyway!
Am finding short trips uses loads of juice, but then what do u expect from a 12 yr old 2.4td.

well hope thats of some use

You're as young as you feel - most of the people with Surfs are truely young at heart

I have a couple of questions about the car that dont seem to be in the manual.

Firstly is there any way of opening the boot without using the button inside the cab? Key in back door - left side. Turn one way to bring window down and the other to bring it back up.

What does the small switch to the right of the steering wheel do? when i press it, the revs go up a bit on their own, press it again, they go back. Does just that. Meant for keeping charging level high if you're stopped and you've got a lot of electrics in use.

How easy is it to fit a kit to change my speedo to mph instead of kmh? Pretty easy. Hardest thing is getting the dash off and then the speedo unit out. Once you've done that you're left with two challenges. One - getting the speedo needle off. Slow and steady is the name of the game. Best levering both sides of the centre hub carefully. I've done three and none of them have come off without a fight. Two getting the little pin/stop off. Just need to drill off / file off the little bobble on the back and then it should just pull off. You'll probably need to drill the hole in your new speedo a little bigger and then just glue the pin in place.

What is best to use? the hard or soft suspention setting? i cant realy tell the difference. You will as you do more driving (unless the shox have been replaced with non Toyota ones). Use whatever you feel comfortable with. That said, usually use the Hard setting for towing / heavy loads.

I would also appreciate any tips on keeping the fuel consumption down, particulaly on motorways trips. Don't rev the @rse off it!

Im sure there will be many more questions to follow,
      any help much appreciated.

      Many Thanks

      Tim

sorry but no your not the youngest... i am 18 you might be the youngest with a 2.4 tho cause mines a 3.0

boot: put your key in the lock and turn it one way drops the window other way raises it, then theres a tab and handle on the insde that you pull,

suspension: turn it to soft then jump in the back u will feel it bounce arround like mad, turn it to hard and do the same you will notice a differance

Hi there Tim - welcome to the Forum

Don't worry about being too young to Surf - it just means that you will be able to do it for longer than most of the rest of us.

                welcome newbie
glad to hear of you gettin a surf if you want a manual for your new baby try looking at ebay for a guy called steve sutton aka manual man i got one from him and it came in the speed of light.just make sure you dont kill another car like i did whilst reversing as you can get blind spots and if you have a rear mounted wheel on the back that alone can do damage

Hehe I think Laurasnuts is the youngest at about 12, and Penguin is only a little older... mind you they have to ride in their dads surfs...

I think most of your questions have been answered, but if you feel no difference between the hard and soft shock setting you may find your shocks are knackered - common fault after 12 years!! It's relatively easy and cheap to change them - most people go for aftermarket procomps, or milners springs - you'll find endless info on this is you search.

                  Welcome to the surf gang!!

                      Hi Adam,

Great to know there are some other brave young surfers out ther too!

My Rear window wont go down with the key n the back, i guess this is a fault.
Do you know if its hard to fix?
Also i have one other electric window that doesnt work,
                      Any thoughts

                      Thanks

I would start by removing the panel on the tail gate and checking that the connections to the microswitch are making good contact. Have a poke around with the old multi-meter to see if there is any current flowing.
If the connections are ok then the microswitch mite b worn. meaning replacement. Same sort of procedure with the other window.
If you have a wiring manual it mite help 2 trace the problem, coz theres a lot of wiring in these cars.
Give this a go and let me know how you get on.

HI I got my surf when I was (21) now I'm 23 AND have 2 surfs:-)

                            both 2.4's

one is a manual and one is auto.

                            Both working fantastic!!

Little bit of TLC goes along way.

Thing to remember is that these were bult for off roading and pulling, Not for doing 90+ on the motorway, off road they will last years!!!!#

                            Good luck with your surfing!!

                            AND MOST OF ALL

Well your younger than me, Im 23. Picked mine up about 2 weeks ago now.

Love it. Only major downside is fuel consumption. Just drove down to porthtowan (North Cornwall) form Teignmouth (South Devon) and back and it used more than £30 in fuel. Was very surprised, but then I'm used to a 1.7 corsa diesel where £15 - £20 will do that journey with a little left over.
