is this a good guide to refilling and sorting the cooling system on a Surf? - http://www.allhead.com.au/cooling.html

do I need to do all that, or is there an easier way to remove the airlocks?

    thanks

    Jim,

I just refilled and got rid of the ailocks via the small hose that run into the heater matrix. Did it around 4 months ago, no probelms yet.

Just fill the system and let air out by losening the hose and then top it up, repeat until you can't get anymore in.

    Good luck.

I did that on my smurf, slowly lost water over a few weeks then took it up to stevo, my head was toast, so he did the topup after doing the head.

My personal advice is this, keep an eye on all levels, and not just once a month!

      Good luck

Do you know how Stevo refilled the system? We seem to have it running OK by filling via the radcap, then squeezing all the hoses until we could get no more fluid in. Then we ran it up to temperature and then checked the level again and topped it up, then ran it again. All seems to be OK - the temp needle sits about 1/3 way up (a little under the half way marker) at idle and doesn't get any hotter, and she seems to run just fine.

I shall certainly check it after each run to see what the coolant level is doing, but I'm really worried about ruining this new head, so any advice would be appreciated.
