  • Squealing noise when driving ?

    Hi All

Wonder if anyone can give me a bit of advice / diagnosis on the following symptoms.

When driving along there is a squealing noise, unable to determine location at this time, but sounds a bit like a belt ? On accelerating the noise clears, if I take my foot off the accelerator, the squeal starts, if I dip the clutch the noise clears as well, also disappears if I go over a bump.

Any ideas where to look ? Don't know any mechanics yet over here ( moved to Holland last month ) so thought I'd put a post on the forum.

    Cheers

A loose fan belt usually squeals when you accelerate as the loose belt has to 'catch up' with the drive pulley - usually goes away when the engine revs level out. Could be that the revs drop as you are dipping the clutch so the belt stops slipping and just for luck if it goes away when you hit a bump is the alternator loose ?

Might be a fan, I seem to remember about a month and a bit ago in the UK, there was a squeal when starting up as if it was the fan belt then would clear. Light is starting to fade over here so will take a look under the bonnet tomorrow after work.

      Thanks for the reply.

if it clears when dipping the clutch it is most likely the thrush bearing in the clutch, had this on a couple of my cars this year, not a big job

Ah location of squealing possibly identified....

Update on the noise, last night driving on the motorway I could get a better listen to the noise and hopefully someone could maybe suggest what the problem is please ?

Squealing noise sounds like metal on metal turning against each other ( sort of ) the noise is coming from underneath towards the rear of the car. When the Surf drives, the noise from the engine is really loud ( maybe masking the noise ) and the whole car vibrates like mad when I accelerate, if I take my foot off the accelerator, the engine noise clears, and the squeal from the back is audible.

Larger tyres were fitted before we left the UK ( 31inch ) and Barbara says the engine noise started after the tyres were fitted ( rumble noise / vibration due to the larger tyres maybe ? )

              Any ideas ?

I'm very close to bringing it back earlier to the UK and scrapping it, anyone interested in a cheap surf to play in ?
