  • Urgent Problem

My new baby Smurf has hit a problem.
I was climbing a long steady hill when my Rad split. The tempreture started to rise very quickly and before I knwo it the engine cut out. I presume this is a very sensible safety feature. Anyway, after letting the engine cool and restarting the engine the turbo is not working. Can anyone from this forum advise if they have experienced this before? I am taking the assumption that the turbo also has a safety mechanism that prevents it from over heating and causing to much damage to itself.

    Help me please

I'm afraid that these engines (or indeed most engines) to my knowledge do not have a safety cut out for overheating, the safety cut out is the driver turning off the engine as soon as the temp gauge indicates it is above normal temp. The most likely scenario is the engine heat seized. This may or may not in itself cause damage, but given the 2.4's tendency to crack the cylinder head, its entirely possible this may have happened. The turbo may also have seized due to the excessive heat. When you say the turbo is not working, how do you know? exactly what symptoms are you experiencing, also I assume you have repaired the rad before reusing the vehicle, as otherwise you will certainly be inviting trouble.

The truck has been shipped to Keary's in Cork who's initial diagnosis is that it's broken!!!

I killed the engine asap and have not started it since as you rightly said it's asking for trouble. As for the turbo not working, when the AA came out, the started the engine and revved her up a few times (good so not siezed!!) but the turbo could not be heard whining not did my lovely green light come on. This is not so good. The next step, having had the jeep only 2 weeks is to get the repair wrok don under warranty. The dealer is claiming that if the Rad failure caused any damage then it's wear and tear. However, if something else (gasket failing etc) caused the rad to fail then it's covered. So I hope Mr Toyota in Cork can find the root casue and show that it was not the rad as a root cause!!

Remember the turbo / turbo light will not come on while the truck is standing at what you might expect to be the normal revs...
Caught me out when I had my head done...
The boost light comes on under load....

If after repairing/replacing the rad there is excess pressure building up in the system it could point to the head being cracked, this would not likely have resulted from the burst rad but could well have been the cause of excess pressure leading to the rad blowing in the first place. Such cracks would not have appeared overnight but would have been present at time of purchase,if this is the case you should be able to get them to fork out for new head, rad and anything else required inc turbo etc.
Have a search round the forum if you are not already familiar with the 2.4 head situation, it may be useful to arm yourself with some knowledge on the topic.

Brilliant, Toyota confirmed that the head was defective to start with. The warranty will cover the cost of a replacement head but the cost of any subsequent or 'knock damage' (ie the radiator).

Cheers Guys, you have been very helpful and now the Smurf has a new genuine Toyota Head!! Now the fun really begins.

All I want to know is this,
is there anyone out there with a 2.4 who has not had the head done??!!!
Apart from those lucky f.... people who brought it after it had been done, or those unfortunate ones who dont know yet!

Either way, Stevo is worth his weight in gold!
                  Well, should be by now!!

Cue loads of 2.4 owners rightfully defending their motors. As we all know, its far from a majority of 2.4 engines that suffer cracked heads, just that they're the only ones we hear about. Theres gotta be hundreds of em happily chugging away without a sign of trouble.

Done 25,000 km in my 2.4 over the last year including lots of abuse, don't think the heads been changed and no problems with it at all. It's a great vehicle.
