  • How difficult to disable turbo?

The turbo on my 92 Surf 2.4 diesel makes that annoying whistling noise. Is there an easy way to just disable the turbo? I'm not a speed freak and I don't suppose the turbo really adds that much power, it's probably just something else to break down ;-)

your joking rite?... you could take the tubby off but your eng would be leaking oil and water... it shouldnt be that loud that you notice it over the diesel noise...

try running some flexable hosing direct from the air filter to the intake manifold, see what kinda power you have, still the turbo would then be exposed and still sucking unfiltered air in so that would need to be seen to immediately or you could loose the resale value on the turbo

You may not be a speed freak but the surf engine is designed to run with a turbo, if you remove it your surf will become a snail especially if you try to tackle hills, several people have posted before when turbos have not been working and i think about 55mph was a top speed and to pull away on a roundabout you will need to book an appointment and have a blue light escort to get you out safely!!
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!
I gave it some abuse.................and it broke!!!!!!!

I ran mine without the Turbo for half a day as there was an electrical problem with it.
I was doing WALKING speed up some hills. It had ZERO power.
I love the whistle of my Turbo.

          Don't do it mate!!!

            no turbo ????

why on earth would you want to run with no turbo, on purpose as well? I swapped my engine late last year due to the usual head probs. The engine I was sent from parts r us has no hole for the crank shaft sensor. The result is no turbo, no fun, no speed, no safety and fuel consumption is no different as you have to rev the s*** out of the beast just to get it to move. If you still insist in running with no turbo come up to Aberdeen, Scotland for your holidays and I will gladly swap Surfs with you,
            Good luck.

Check the rubber pipe from the air filter to the inlet manifold - if it is split the turbo will whistle (and your engine will wear out)

Open up the air cleaner - remove the filter and chuck a handful of sand in That ought to do it.

Sorry, but I kind of like the whissslin noise you get when the air pipe splits, sounds just like the corsa across the road, but with bigger tyres!
And I can drive over him!!
