Weird noise and now no drive?????

Hello all,was wondering if anyone can help,my surf has been making a weird noise for a couple of weeks now,the only way i can describe it is like a crisp packet rustling somewhere in the engine,it has gradually got worse and can develop into a loud knocking noise whilst driving.Tonight it lost all drive just like it would if it jumped out of gear,it will still drive in low box tho.I have absolutly no idea what it is and would appreciate your views.Thanks in advance.

You need to let us know which Surf it is you have ie. 2.4/3lt - auto/manual - 1st - 2nd Gen etc

Soz silversurfer,it's a 2.4td manual,not sure what gen but i will find out somehow.
