  • Head Welded & Running Fine

    Hi Guys,

I posted a thread a few months ago with overheating problems on a 2.4td. The general opinion was a cracked head which was proven right when we too it off and had a look. Two hairline cracks.

Getting a head old or new at a resonable price was proving a hassle ( I'm in S.Africa close to Mozimbique Border) my mechanic sent it off to a specalist welding shop to be welded and we pressure tested it and it held. It cost 15% the price of a new head.

I've been driving with it for three months in very hot conditions and it is performing the same as before, no water loss or power loss.

What I wanted to know is , has anybody ever tried this before ( as I was very suspicious when the mechanic suggested it) and if so is it likely to hold.

    cheers

    Gerry

I'm fairly sure that welded heads can be sourced in the UK, but most go for the modified heads where the valves and the waterways are not so close together.
I know my brother has used welded heads on Landrovers without any trouble. I hope it continues to hold up for you.
    It's only a hobby!
