Anybody know how similar the 2.4TD engine in a 1988 2.4 SWB Landcruiser would be to my 2LT.
It's one of the engines I've been offered as a replacement.
If its like my friends one, then its exactly the same!
Went for a look at it today........ran fine , but looked a bit agricultural compared to a 2L-T . Possibly based on the same motor ,but some significant differences.
Went for a look at a 3L non-turbo Supra as well..............nice !!
I have had to replace my motor.
I now have a fully rebuilt 2.4 with brand new head and pistons
and all the other stuff.
Although I dont't regret it cos I now have a very good reliable motor.
However I will divulge you with some info that I did'nt know at the time
but had I known this, is what I would have done.
I heard you can not drop a 3 liter in because it has a totally different loom
and replacing the loom is nigh on impossible exercise.
but I met a bloke (at volvo school) who did a cunning trick to avoid this complication.
you can drop a 3 liter straight in but throw away the injector pump
and fit the injector pump from your 2.4 on instead -- yes it fits -- and it works -- and it avoids having to change the loom..
the 2L-T injector pump is set to deliver maximum of 7 pounds boost.
but has capability to be set to deliver enough fuel for 10 pound boost.
This is what Noel (the bloke) set his to... also he rigged an intercooler..
I don't know what it dynoed out to, but the extra horse power blew his standard 2.4 clutch straight away.. and he had to replace it with a heavy duty one ( cost a lot for this)... but hey.. his surf does 180kph.
fortunatley he 'tripped over' the 3 liter motor.. and is a mechanic.
as you proberbly know the 2.4 motor is ok... but the 3 is a better motor and is just as economical.
I know what I would do if I was faced with a 2.4 rebuild again.
Hi l beg to differ on just changeing the fuel pump you would also need,
1/ Bellhouseing "totally" different
2/ Front pipe or even full exhuast
3/ Radiator
4/ Starter Motor
5/ Engine mounts to be moved
6/ Fuel Pump on are UK models different
7/ Turbo is not the same
The list goes on the easist way to fix a 2.4 is to rebuild it.
there a chap on the australian site doing this, and it looks absolutely horrific! easier to jack up the number plates and drop a new car in http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/enginetrans.htm im sure it will be lovely when its done tho...
