2.4 surf problems help

Hello I have just joined the club (shiny) and no longer feel in the dark or on my own.

I hope someone could shed some light on 3 problems that I have with a Surf 1990 2.4 turbo diesel

No 1 when I start cold there is no turbo light and when it gets to a certain temp it comes on, and produces a surge then when it’s fully heated it goes off permanently.. Sometimes it comes on intermittent at random times, their seems to be no problem in power but I do notice when it comes on a mild surge. No pipes are disconnected I have a turbo timer but this is switched off and there is no difference if on. The battery has been disconnected several times, does this do something?

No2 it has a creaking sound when I turn sharp left or right especially if I go up a slight mound either side at the front.

No 3 it has a oil leak (don't they all) I have been told it’s the seal between gear box and engine but I am not convinced as it seems to come from a area above the engine block. I have had a new fuel pump gasket fitted so it definitely is oil underneath, it’s hard to tell where it’s coming from. will a oil seal liquid in a tin from a garage help?

Number 1 - When you say there is no power problem, can you hear the turbo spinning up. You may want to get a garage to put a boost gauge on to test the turbo boost levels. Could be a problem with the Turbo indicator feed from the ECU. If the battery has been disconnected, sometimes the ECU gets a bit confused, try disconnecting for at least 15 minutes and then reconnectiong, this will reset the ECU.

Number 2 - Could be a number of problems but is most likely to be steering stops that need greasing up - they have plastic caps on originally but these wear and fall off. Search on here for steering stops.

Number 3 - Could be rocker cover gasket or possibly turbo oil feed pipes (that may be the reason the turbo isn't cutting in if there is no boost). These are both common areas for oil leaks. Also there is a half moon shaped blanking plug at the rear of the head which may be weaping, or a head gasket weap however if it is significant I would look at the first two first. Oil pipes to the turbo would be my first choice - underneath the Turbo there are two small pipes with a joint at the top (both pipes go into one joint), 2 12mm nuts hold it on and it is a bu**er to get at.

One last possibility is that the oil filter isn't tight and is leaking - had that on mine last year.

(have disconnected the battery what is an ECU and a turbo inductor feed)

Had a good look under and the oil from engine is coming from above sump on the passenger side mid area of engine, but have tightened up oil drain plug + a few others in case..

One last possibility is that the oil filter isn't tight and is leaking - had that on mine last year. This is OK

I have taken it to a garage and they have found where the oil leak is coming
from it would appear to be the inlet manifold gasket and is running down
I am going to have a go myself is this a fairley easy thing to do? I will get gasket and get stuck in, anyone know what the pitfalls might be?

I cured the clonking and slapped dollops of grease on steering stops works a treat many thanks for this. will have a look at turbo when i get to have a go at the manifold as i have to remove all this I think to replace the manifold gasket?
