Can any of you intelligent beings help me with this one?
I'm not sure if the 4WD is working, the ADD seems to be making all the right noises i.e solenoid clickings and whirring/ clunk at the diff. If i jack up a front wheel, leave the handbrake on and engage 4WD should the jacked wheel rotate with the engine running?I'm not to keen on taking it into the muddy stuff and risking an embaressing phone call to get dragged out!
    Cheers.

From what I know, the wheel should rotate yes. Unless you have some diff lock fitted and locked, in which case both wheels will spin and bye-bye jack.

Somehow I have doubts about the safety of jacking up one front wheel and engaging any sort of drive.

If you have a 4WD light on and you are engaged in either H or L, then you have 4WD. (i.e. not if the lever is half way between - then you won't get any sort of drive)

Is there any reason why you think it might not be working?

BTW, the book says you should always have all 4 wheels firmly in contact with the ground before engaging 4WD.

      Cheers

Oh - and dont use 4WD on metalled roads in a 2nd Gen Surf.

I think it's not working properly as I got on some soft stuff and did'nt seem to have any front traction, only got the rears spinning!
I've used this method on many vehicles to test for bearing noise, warped discs etc... but i'm deeply touched by your concern for my physical wellbeing. It's obviously my sanity thats the issue!!

Well, if its not working you may have a damaged vacuum pipe to the ADD actuator on the front axle (assuming the electrics are doing their job). If you are going to go ahead with your scheme, you'd need to lift the wheel where the ADD operates - nearside I think. The other one would spin anyway as its always connected. But as far as I know, its the ADD collar sliding on teh shaft that actuates the light - so if the 4WD light is ON it ought to mean that the collar is in place.

          Cheers

No it won't, but its not as easy as that, with the hand brake on and in 4wd, both axles are solidly connected so the hand brake will hold the front axle to. But, one wheel will still spin if you try them one at a time cos of the front diff, better to try and turn the front prop shaft.

The light won't come on till both the t/case and ADD coller are in the correct place, so if the 4Wd light is on and you still don't have 4wd its something obvious, expensive and generally noisey like a front diff or CV's busted.

Someone hasn't fitted manual hubs on the front and these arn't locked maybe?

Just jacked up the N/S/R +N/S/F, Chocked the O/S wheels and engaged 4WD.The front prop and N/R wheel are turning, but not the N/F wheel, there's no expensive sounding orrible noises so i suspect that i might have a vacuum problem not allowing the actuator to fully engage the collar although sometimes you can hear a clunk on engaging 4wd. Oh joy, an intermittant problem. The hubs aren't manual and the light doesn't come on. Could this be a simple pipe leaking?
              Any other ideas gratefully accepted!
              Cheers.

                There is a God.
I've just checked the vacuum pipes in the engine compartment and found a broken pipe in which runs behind the turbo to air filter box( EFI written on it).
I managed to find some tube that fits and suddenly I've got a working 4WD and the light on the dash now comes on
Next question, whats ATP, this light comes on and i havent got a clue?
Anyhow....... Cheers for all your help people.

hi keef ,my manual reads like this ,
                  AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PARKING WARNING:
should this light show the transferlevel is in neutral.
this light will only show if the transmision is placed in park in this situation.place the transfer lever in 2wd or 4wd immediately. in this situation the holding power of the park gear is not connected, only the handbrake is holding the vehicle .this is extremely dangerous if you are leaving the vehicle even on a slight hill.
this is typed exactly as the manual reads ,hope this helps cheers mate

Cheers for the info m8. It isn't on now, must have been a gremlin but at least I've got the explanation for future reference.
