  • Cracked head V Filler cap rubber.

Well my beloved “pig” had all the symptoms of having a cracked head.. losing water, temp gauge rising on hard uphill runs, water and steam blowing out of the expansion bottle. I filled her up for one last time, doing the usual of waiting for thermostat with heaters on blah blah. I put the filler cap back on the theromost housing, and there it was right in front of me. The rubbers had perished on the cap so this was letting water out when under load. When the load was off after a good run, the cap was then letting air in which was then forcing water and steam out of the expansion bottle.

£11.78 later from Toyota main dealers and the “pig” is running like a dream again. Took her for a gruelling off road run yesterday which would have made most others get all hot and sweaty.. and not a drop lost.

So if any of you out there feel like your head has gone.. cos your cars head has gone, go spend a few quid and see if you can save yourself a few hundred…

Most change the stat and cap as a matter of course, its over heating like this that cause the cast heads to crack, they are not very tolerable of over heating.

I had same problem few months ago, I replaced cap, removed stat and it is still running great now after several off road trips...

Yeah, Jez had his truck up the other day, his old cap had no pressure in the spring compared to a new one. It always worth changing as you don't want 2.4's getting hot in the slightest. A faulty cap will let water out slowly into the the expansion tank till theres not enough left and it will overheat with usual 2.4 dire conciquinsesesessss......

As a side note, Linda's new as of last year cap is already crap, and was leaking water past it with a knackered spring, had to fit another new one. (bought from a different place this time............. )
