  • Hiace engine fit 1990 Surf ?

Need an engine for a 1990 Surf not EFI. Will a UK Hiace van engine fit. Since it is not an EFI engine I persume electrics will not be a problem. I would like to know if anyone here has done this swap and was it successful. Since the Hiace van was not turbo'd can it handle the turbo unit from the surf ok. Any info would be welcome as I can pick up a Hiace engine for very small money.

If the Hiace engine is a 2L type then it should fit OK to a non EFI Surf and the Turbo should fit fine as the head is the same. However not sure if the Hiace uses the 2L engine or not.

    Cheers

      Turbo on non-turbo engine

I would be very wary of sticking the turbo on an engine that was not designed to take one, as the compression chambers in the non-turbo head are normally shaped to give different compression ratio. I am no diesel expert, or turbo expert for that matter and I may be wrong, seek further advice before bolting the turbo on.

2L Engine can be found in the Hiace but it wont fit an EFI Surf as there is no knock sensor for the crankshaft & you cant modify it either.
Do some research on this 1st as i cant Guarantee the outcome.

Marky his '90 surf wont be looking for a crank position sensor coz its non-EFI, thats exaclty what he DOES want.

I've been told my replacement engine comes from something 'home-sold' but I've no way of telling what it was (if it was). The engine no. however reads 2L2533486. Anyone cross reference that to something?

            Jim.

It's a 2L2 engine therefore from a UK Hilux Pickup

This is what I was thinking.

Mind you on the Surf the Head and the pistons are both flat, on the combustion chamber size could be different but then the 2L head is the same whether Turbo or non turbo so then the only other thing would be to put a thicker gasket on the Turbo which would reduce the compression ratio.

                Cheers

I think the 2L2 engine appeared sometime around 1996 or so (not sure though).

The U2 went cos I ran out of space for my signature when I added the Cruiser.

                    Cheers
