    Hopefuly, a quick question and answer!

    I have a Breakers near me that has a surf in stock and a mate has asked me to get him the caliper and disk off it for him. I've had a look through the Surf manual from Milners but it's not very clear on the procedure and I dont want to spend a lot of time doing this. Can anyone let me know the quickest, most trouble free way of doing this and any specialist tools required, ie outsized sockets.

    The manual just seems to bounce you around from chapter 11 to chapter 1 to chapter 8! Not clear at all. The caliper part is fine, I've done that before, but the disk, thats the part I am not sure about.

    I would suggest not replacing one disc and caliper.If they are not matched then that could cause serious problems.Both discs will need to be the same thickness and pads should be replaced with new ones.

      To get the caliper off there are two bolts at the back (14mm I think) and you will need to remove the pads (pair of pliers to pull out the split pins and a large screwdriver and hammer (hammer out the location v section pins, lever back the pads and out they come). Remove the brake hose (might be best to loosen it off before undoing the bolts on the caliper, however if it is a breaker just take a sharp knife and cut the brake hose. You should now be able to remove the caliper.

      To take off the brake disk, undo the wheel, undo the 6 bolts on the hub (around the front). Leave them on slightly and give the hub a good bash with a hammer which will loosen the cone washers. Remove the nuts and cone washers. Take off the hub bearing dust cap (light tap around the edge with a soft face hammer will do the trick generally, other than that might need help from a screwdriver or chisel to get around the join). Under this you will see a large 54mm nut. This has a lock washer that you need to bend the flats away from the nut. Once you have done this, you may be able to undo the nut with a pair of pliers (it isn't normally very tight). However if it is tight you will need a 54mm socket (or 55mm at a pinch).

      Once this first nut is undone, remove the lock washer and undo the nut behind - again it's 54mm. Once both nuts are removed you can just pull off the disk/hub assembly.

        I understand that he wants these parts for a temporary fix. He's experermenting with a modified suspension system, not on the road though!

        54 mm socket, That's a big one. I will see if I can get hold of one easily.

          55mm is easier to get hold of, draper do one that fits OK (I know, I've got one). Quite expensive though (my 55mm one cost £17, cheapest I've seen a 54mm one for was on the web at around £25).
