    Hi again

been having overheating problems, caused by coolant being shot out through the expansion bottle from time to time, followed the instructions posted on here. cleared the airlocks, or so it seemed but still seemed to shoot the water out. Got into the truck this morning to drieve the mother-in-law to the station (wanted to know she actually went) to find the engine seemd to have seized up, ie the starter motor turns over but the engine won,t, Anyone any ideas.

    Hi,

New to this surfing lark, so I'll probably be miles off the mark!

I had a similar problem on a bike. As the engine appears to be pressurising the cooling system it is not unreasonable to assume that coolant can also go 'the other way'. It may be that your engine has 'hydraulic locked' and the presence of coolant in the combustion chambers is preventing the engine turning over.

If this is the case, removing the plugs should allow the engine to turn over.

HOWEVER, this only treats the symptom, not the disease. Water in the engine is a bad thing (!) and it also looks like you may have a head/ head gasket problem that needs sorting out.

Meantime, If it were my Mother-in-Law, I'd carry her, just to be sure...

    Good Luck

    Graham

When you say the starter motor turns but the engine won't, it could be a starter motor problem however as has been said, pull out the glow plugs and see if it turns over, I would think it is fairly unlikely but possible that the engine had become hydo locked, would have to be a pretty major crack in the head and I would think the engine would have run pretty bad with that amount of loss of compression.

      Still it's worth a go.

Don't always assume that two incidents on a motor causing problems are linked, coincidence is a big factor in a lot of car troubles.

      Cheers

Is the starter actually spinning, but not turning the engine, or just clicking.

first is a starter/flywheel problem, second could be the starter contacts worn, or a locked engine due to water leaking into the bores.

It spins but doesn't turn the engine, but then stops spinning and just whines, so I take a branch and give it a good thrashing!!

Sounds like a starter solenoid problem, also probably bad contacts for the motor - or it could be a tooth gone on the flywheel. You can check that by turning the engine over manually using the crankshaft pulley bolt (19 mm socket). If you turn it over half a turn and then try and start the engine (remember to remove the socket and ratchet before doing that). If it starts I would suggest you have a flywheel tooth missing as you will have moved the flywheel to a new position.

Still think it's the starter that's duff though.

              Cheers
