  • oil in my coolant bottle

My 2.4 dt surf has lots of oil in its expansion tank, the head has been replaced prior to me owning it and it runs great(no over heating) I had the turbo replaced in August along with the torque converter(dont let idiots work on your Surf as the previous owner did with mine, apparently the converter is a sod to bolt upand if not done correcly it comes loose!Expensive beleve me)
anyhow has anybody got an ideas as to what might be causing this, oil cooler? has anyone else had this problem?
Another question I have is my Surf is fitted with 265/70/16 tyres and I think this is giving me false speedo readings(we have a speed warning thing near my home that says 41mph when I approach with my speedo reading 35mph)
is it me or the speed detector bul!!!!ting?
Love the Surf despite the problems and cant wait for some snow to play in!!!
p.s. any good off road sites or green lanes in the west Surrey area?

I have had the same problem since my head was replaced over a year ago, The only thing we can think of is the head gasket must be leaking oil into the water ways. I am getting the gasket replaced soon as i think I've left it as long as can but it is now time to fix it.

Am thinking of getting a surf - hence joining this forum. My 'background' is turbocharged rovers - hence knowing about HGF! Chances are there is oil left in the cooling system. Flush the system through with good old fairy liquid at least twice. (You can go buy an expensive flush if you wish!) This should clear the oil from the system.
Re tightening head - do Surfs use stretch bolts and whats the torque setting? Be careful not to overtighten.
Re- speed, either the road sign is out or the wheels are not the correct radius?

The head does use stretch bolts so i wouldnt recomend tightening them down as you will risk snapping them which will get very expensive to sort, you would be best to flush the system through first, if that doesnt solve it and the problem persists then it would be better to remove the head and fit a new gasket. Good luck with it.
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!

Yep Surf uses stretch bolts, tightening down will not fix anything, in fact you may well break the bolt.

Only way will be to change the head gasket - 14 hours start to finish or ther abouts. Got to do mine next week - combustion leakage into coolant even after a new head - can't have got it settled correctly, or maybe I damaged the head gasket when it overheated due to my stupidity in not putting the radiator cap back on properly.

            Cheers

              Hi guys
you do all know that there are at least 3 different thickness head gaskets fitted on surfs dont you! if your just buying the stock headgasket from the local accs shop chances are it may not seal, or that it will need plenty of goo (thats a technical term for hermetite!) to have any chance of sealing!

When i did mine i fitted the thickest gasket, slight overkill i know but it dont leak oil in to the water

Thanks everyone guess I will be getting some head bolts then! and a gasket.
I havn't heard about the three thickness thing before is this a 2.4 or 3.0 thing as Ive not seen this offered by any parts suppliers for the 2.4?

I'd spend a couple of hours trying a flush before the 14 doing a H.G. Just my opinion though!

I have flushed mine twice since the head was replaced over a year ago but the oil keeps coming back with a vengance.

I do agree that if you have not flushed your system through after the head was replaced then this would be the first thing to try as it might just be contamination from before or during the head being replaced.

                          oil

the oil in the coolant bottle is cuased by a broken oil cooler inside the radiator. take it to a shop that does radiators.

I though 91 Surf's were fitted with 15in wheels as standard. If that's the case, then your speedo will read incorrectly as the gearbox is expecting to provide a signal based on 15 diameter wheels, not the larger 16in. That should account for the discrepancy

yeah, 265/70/16 have 31 inch diameter, the 2nd gen has 15 inch rims with a um... 29? inch tyre?
