To get at the pump I disconnected the hoses marked A & B and lots of what I guess to be hydraulic fluid spilled out. When I reassemble it I'm going to have to top up the fluid somehow. Does anyone know what it is & where to top it up. Also, do I have to prime the fuel pump before starting the car.

They are coolant hoses so you will have to top up the cooling system. You will need to prime the fuel pump via the priming pump on top of the fuel filter. pump it up and down a few times and if you are lucky it will start OK. Otherwise might take a lot more pumping.

No it's not too bad, however have a search around here for coolant flush. When topping up anything other than a small amount, you need to be carefull not to get an airlock. The 2.4 is a pain in the neck for getting airlocks.

The leak is fixed & the Surf is running as sweet as ever. My mechanic said it was a job for a diesel specialist, & might cost alot of money. The internet can be very empowering. Thanks Andy & the others for taking the time to share your knowledge with the rest of us.
