  • Major Starting Problems

I have a 1990 2.4 Turbo Hilux Surf Jap import

I had problems starting recently, would not start till about the 5th go.
Went to local garage, they reconditioned the fuel pump, and replaced glow plugs with 11 volt plugs (11 volt being what they took out)
Still no starting, i brought it to another garage and they told me for definate it was the starter motor and got a reconditioned motor, then they told me it wasnt that at all, the problem lies with the glow plugs and that the proper type to use is a 9 volt and they could not get their hands on one so instead they put a button on the side of the ignition and i have to hold it for 15 seconds beofre the car starts.
Any advice on what i can do from here? As it does not seem like a permanent solution to the problem.
Also i have noticed that the jeep is getting more and more sluugish taking a few seconds to respond to accelorator.
Have done the rounds with garages and do not want to spend any more money untill i am sure i can reach a solution!!!!!!!

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Could be the injectors need servicing, assuming the fuel pump is OK. Has it been serviced properly, fuel filter, air filter, etc...

A toyota dealer should be able to tell you the correct glow plugs, they just need the chassis number.

just wondering what happened when you turned the key, ok it didnt start but did it turn over or just click

theres lots of things you could just check before you spend (spent) money, glow plug fuse (and now that someones been at it the glow plug connecting bar might be replaced wrongly), air filter, fuel filter (a must do), diesel dripping below engine

I am in Ashbourne, the story is is that 11 volt plugs have been put in but the Resistor is 9 Volt and so i have been advised to change the Resistor to an 11 Volt in order to take away the necessity to use the Heat Plug Switch (button) to start up.
New Injectors Have been Put in
          Fuel Pump has been repaired
          Fuel Line has been replaced
Glow Plugs Replaced with 11 Volt.

Got a price for a New Resistor but Toyota not able to tell me what Voltage it is.

          The Saga Continues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it's turning over but not starting it might be worth looking at the connection between the glowplugs and the buzzbar. Mine did this a while back after I had a new set of injectors fitted. It was just some oily c**p that had got in there. 2 mins to fixit.

              Air Leak

Have you checked the flexible hose that runs from the filter housing to the air intake. Mine had a big split that wasnt obvious. It caused very "lumpy" starting and collected moisture on the inside of the tube as the engine cooled.I fixed it and the problem went away.

Just had a phone call from Jennys boyfriend (turns out to be son of a guy I used to work with, small world).
They are still having problems as described, also replaced battery last week, but made no difference, yet he reckoned when jumpstarting it did start a little easier!
I have no good advice for them as most things I can think of appear to have been tried already, assuming of course that the work thay have had done has been done competently.
I've recomended they come back to the forum to recheck this thread, as there may have been some offers of help they have missed out on....

Also I've seen this Surf, and its criminal, its quite tasty looking, they've got full bullbars, front winch, looks like a few inches of suspension lift ............ ............. and they don't take it offroad!!

Go on, get it muddy, ya know ya should...

I cant sleep. This thread bugs me. What was the initial problem - its still not clear. Did it turn over or not???? What happened the first 4 times she tried it before it started???? You cant troubleshoot if theres no detail.

                            Still shes had:
                            reconditioned fuel pump
                            new glow plugs
                            reconditioned starter motor
                            new injectors
                            new fuel line

This surf has so much stuff replaced, I want it! Maurice we should draw up a checklist and see this surf and go through stuff.
