  • knocking/rattling head

    Hiiiiiiii everybody

I've just joined and very glad that i did.

I need help, i have noticed a rattling/knocking noise coming from the cylinder head when i try to maintain the revs @ 2000. The car seems to drive fine, but, obviously i'm becoming a little paranoid, because i don't want a loud bang from the engine

Anybody else come across this before or have any ideas on what this could be.

    thanks

DONT PANIC!!!!! mine does it with a brand new head and valves, the guy round the corner to me who has a 2.4 has exactly the same noise, only hear it when not under load ie free reving.
    Hope that helps

Quite often you will hear diesel knock when trying to hold the engine revs without load, this is because the ECU is trying to compensate the fuel timing but expecting a load on it and consequently overfuelling. As long as the knock isn't bad on the overrun or when under load I wouldn't worry.

Diesels take a bit of getting used to however the rule I was always told is that if a Diesel is noisy, it's OK. If it's quiet then it isn't and is running bad. Diesels should be noisy, it's a consequence of a compression ignition engine, it fires much less cleanly than a petrol engine and also has a far higher compression ratio. The knock you hear is part combustion noise, part engine components comlaining under the load - best point with Diesels is that the engine components and bearings are built to stand up to this.

      Cheers
