  • KZN130 Power Steering Pump

    Hello Gentlemen

First time poster. Searching the forum typically helped me with what I needed until now, but not this time.

I have owned a 95 Surf 1kz-te (import) for a little over 2 years now. It came from Japan with a small leak at the back of the power steering pump, which seems to be typical with these. I replaced it with a Chinese unit from Roughtrax. It has been working fine until now.

This week I saw a few drops of oil on the floor. After degreasing and washing the whole area, I figured out that fluid is coming out through a gap between the pump body and the block. I also noticed that about a 1/2 mm gap developed between the pump and the block because the nuts have come undone a bit. I might not have torqued these enough for fear of damaging the threads and also because it's so tight back there.

    Now to my questions...

    1. Do you think it is power steering fluid? Is it even supposed to come out of the gear end of the pump even if the seal is not tight? If not, what else could it be?

    2. Do I need a new pump or just tightening the nuts and having a good seal between the pump and the block will fix the leak? (I did replace the gasket when I swapped the pump.)

    3. I see that a OEM Prado KZJ90 pump is still available for purchase from Toyota. The only difference between the two pumps seems to be the inlet port, which I can possibly swap over. Below are the links to the two pumps. Every part inside the pump seems to be the same. Do you think I can buy a Prado pump instead of a Chinese clone? I pored over the pictures, comparing the two pumps and I can't find any other difference.

I'm pretty much on my own here in the US with these RHD diesels. Appreciate any information you can provide.

    thanks

Between pump and block is probably engine oil. Maybe tightening bolts will cure the problem but I would use a new gasket as well.
