Starting problem on KZN 185

Got a starting problems with my kzn 185, it started with my glow plug light staying on , then when I started it it would fire up right away then cut out , it would do this 3 or 4 times then run ok but now its 10 or more times , now I have no glow plug light at all , and the idle is high after changing the batteries. My local diesel mechanic says there are no codes coming up . Any suggestions would be welcome ... I've had it 17yrs so don't want to get rid of it .
