Quick Techie Question !

Having just put 4 new BFGs AT on the SURF someone told me this today:

The spare i have is the same size 265/70/16 but a different tread pattern to the ATs so if i had a puncture big problems can occur cos the circumference is a lot different ( due to the ATs having big say about 12 - 15mm more tread ) !

Just wondered if

1 this is true ?
2 a lot of damage can be done ?
3 wot damage if any over wot distance can happen

If you treat it as you would a "space saver el cheapo" wheel you'll be OK
Use it only for as long as absolutly neccessary, for a short distance and at reduced speed.

As it has a different diameter it will cause the diff to work harder than normal when fitted, the difference in diamater coupled with the difference in thread pattern will likely give the possibility of some strange handling characteristics if pushed.

For under 50 miles and under 50mph you should be OK, but remove as soon as possible.

1 Yes, will cause wind up in the diff due to the different speeds that the wheels will turn in a straight line on the rear.
Also will make slight less stable turning when on the front.
2 If you take it slow, refit the correct tyre as soon as possible then no damage should occur.
3 There should be no damage as the diff is designed to allow for differing wheel speeds as occur whenever the car is cornering/manovering, BUT traveling long distances especialy on the motorway/high speed straight line may damage the diff.

Treat the tyre just like an emergancy tyre, keep below 50 and emergancy running only.

you won't get diff wind up... it's only the same as if you use an old tyre with a new one.... shouldn't bother too much if it's just as a spare!
