Getting close to home tonight and followed a patrol car for about 3/4 mile until he pulled over to let me past and started following me. Sure enough the blue lights came on and I thought for sure he was going to have me about the protruding wheels.

However as he came up to the window he was looking at the tyres and muttering something about "oh well - you've just answered my question". Apparently he was looking for a 4x4 with a high mounted bullbar that was involved in a ram raid. When he saw the Suzi prone front wing he thought his luck had changed. However my tyres are the wrong make so there goes the detection figures for this month.

I was asked such probing questions as "had I been involved in a ram raid", "had I changed my tyres today" and "was I going to be involved in a ram raid" to which the answers were "no", "no" and "I wouldn't tell you if I was".

Never mentioned the sticky out tyres, so they must be ok then.

The other thing I said was do you think I'd be driving an H reg truck if I'd just done a ram raid? And as for Morrisons - don't those trolleys dent easy - and they really need bigger wheels for the off road section in the car park !

The big giveaway was the can of Red Stripe under the windscreen wiper.

Hmmm, reminds me of a massive faux pas I once made when buying a secondhand car. It was a jet black Carlton GSI3000 (no that wasn't the mistake - the car was great!) but after getting the docs and parting with the cash the guy was going on and on about what a great deal I'd got and what great condition the paint was in etc. blah blah and I just wanted to be on my way. In order to shut him up, I simply said "I'm not worried about the paint, it's leaving here and going straight through the front of Dixons" and turned to leave. When he didn't move though I looked back at him and he had this look of pure horror on his face and was looking at his wife. Who from nowhere suddenly produced her.... yup, you guessed it... Police warrant card. Now it probably didn't he lp that I was wearing jeans, a black rollneck, a full length black trench coat, a beanie hat that looked like a rolled up balaclava and was carrying a maglite

Squirmed a bit and convinced her I was joking though! She wasn't going to do anything anyway as she'd have had to explained that she'd just sold her untaxed and un-sorned motor!

Was the cause the gel had dried up on the back of the little electrical unit by the wing? The gel stops that jobby heating up but as soon as it dries, the car won't start when hot and it's a bugger to locate the cause. Happened on my old Pug too.

dunno... we just used to push start it when hot!.... we were young and foolish!... it got nicked in the end... but we got it back, the bloke had nicked it cos it was nicer than his and changed the plates and put loads of good stuff on it and a cushtie stereo... but can't really remember what happened to it after that!

Must have been a feature in those days. I had one of the first RS Turbos and that used to do the same thing. Mind you the turbo used to glow cherry red after a thrash so that probably didn't help Oh and the clutch would fade as well - used to boil the fluid.

hehehe!... bloke we bought the xr3i off had a turbo escort van... same thing!...
could spin the wheels inside the tyres!... stupidly fast (had loads of mods)
in the end the shocks were so hard the front end started breaking off so he stuck an 1800 diesel in and sold it to daves brother!
