  • steering problem/lock up?? help

driving along came up to a mini roundabout, christ all of a sudden front steering went heavy, and stiff, about to lock up all lights on the dash lighted up every one. loss of power steering, felt like brakes locked up tight too.
    advice please
drove home when traffic had gone down but hard to steer and brake.
    no stopping power at all.
is this down to low power steering oil, a belt going, or pump blowing?

    thanks oz.

Praps your alternator belts have snapped or thrown off, maybe the tensioner has siezed. if the alternator has stopped you won't get any vacuum to the brakes. It could have taken the power steering belt out as well.

You need to get it running, and check all the pullys are going round as the belts turn, could be something locked up.

            had running/no belts running around.

hi , t had it running when i jumped it of to drive it on to the drive, none of the pulleys were going around.

as the crank/woodruff key broke, is this common, like i said had no warning, this could of cause a very bad crash.
            cheers ozzy

sorry, missed that bit. Check your crankshaft pully, it has a rubber coller between the hub and the pulley, its the damper. This has been known to come unstuck and not drive the pulleys and just spin the hub.

Ours just squealled but still drive the belts, I think this happens in most cases, you were just unlucky.

I don't think its too common or worth making a fuss about, I only think 3 or 4 people have had this ploblem on the forum.

                strip out

so need to strip rad and fans out to get down there then? seems a fuss to me,more concerned that no warning given, and that it could of caused a crash and wrecked my surf and more costs.

thanks for the input tony anyway looks like thats my weekend sorted then.

take it the dampner can be bought from milners?

                thanks again ozzy

Better one correct answer then one hundred unsure . Better allow the correct one to come through .
