Yes there is/was a 4x4 Cavalier and Calibra . The Calibra had a ECU controlled transfer box , not very reliable either .

Why would you need a diff if it wasn't a limited slip one? Think about it!

limited slip is used so you can have full power to both wheels but still have a diff to allow one to slip while cornering.
that's why you only have 1 wheel drive, the limited slip will give you "true" 2wd... the centre diff links the front and rear props and will only give 1 wheel drive when you start slipping, so you have a diff lock in it to give at least 2 driven wheels (1 front and 1 rear)

Its virtually correct though, except you never get 100% traction to either side of an axle with a LSD, it won't drive a lifted wheel like a locker will.

Well that's the first bit out of the way...

If you lose traction on one wheel of an axle with an open diff the torque is transferred to the wheel that has lost traction isn't it? Now remembering that we were talking about centre diffs.... If you have an open centre diff the same applies and the torque is transferred from the axle that has drive to the one that has a wheel without traction so you have NO traction at any wheel.

All of this is off topic from the original thread anyway as the subject was how you could use a FWD engine and gearbox to power a 4WD vehicle.
