  • To LPG or Not To LPG that is the question?

    Hi,

I have just purchased my first Surf, its a 3L Turbo D. I was half thinking of doing an LPG conversion and was curious to find out what members thought about this? Ok let me have....Thanks Snapperx

As its diesel the only thing you can really do is lpg fumigation where you use diesel but have the lpg running at the same time to give an extra boost.
Personally i dont see the point as you have to use both fuels at once.

Only petrols can be converted to run solely on lpg (unless you lower the compression ratio a lot and replace glowplugs with sparkplugs etc etc)

I was looking at the benefits to Emissions, MPG, and as its a old truck I was told it can be a bit easer on the old boys engine. I have only met people with the Petrol conversion so you could be on to something...Cheers

in aussie there was lots of them done when there was a tax rebate on lpg installs (tho most install price went up the same amount the rebate was, go figure).
big problem is the initial price which is pretty much the same price as an older surf.
there is a slight gain in economy, might be a bit more in older engines, but the pay back period for install cost was something like 10+ years.

most of them did it for the extra power. it worked out they got a lot of extra power with no increase in running costs.
the catch is the more lpg you put in for power, the greater the risk of failure. unfortunately some did fail.
