  • Suspension rebuild

My surf has suffered 20 years of salty roads. The bodywork is fine. The chassis is solid but there is surface rust everywhere. I have a friend who restores cars who will charge me mates rates to restore it. I plan to have the suspension stripped off and then the underneath hydro-blasted before spraying with Yacht Primer, then stonechip paint.

    1) Most suspension components need replacing. Have I missed anything obvious off this list?

    2) Karma Supra - can I talk to you about your rear axle casing please?

    3) Are uprated anti-roll bars available?

    4) Do the wishbone arms come with bushes already fitted?

    Shopping list - Gen 3, 3.0td auto.

    Front droplink x2
    Front lower wishbone arm x2
    Front upper wishbone arm x2
Front lower wishbone arm bushing x4
Set of upper and lower arm long bolts/nuts
Lower wishbone arm camber bolt adjustment x4
    Front anti-roll bar bushing x2
    Front anti-roll bar clamp x2
Front disk brake back plate x2
    Front coil springs x2 (+20%)
    Rear coil springs x2 (+20%)
    Front shock absorber x2
    Rear shock absorber x2
    Front shock absorber gaiter x2
Front top shock mounting with nut/bolt set x2
    Rear drop link x2
    Rear upper control arm x2
    Rear lower trailing arm x2
    Rear anti-roll bar
    Rear anti-roll bar bushing x2
    Diesel tank filler and breather
    Rear axle bump stop x2

I have already had front discs, calipers, track rods and tie rods replaced.
Not allowed 1) tools 2) matches 3) sharp objects

  • #2
    + upper ball joints x 2
    + lower ball joints x 2
    + rear diff breather

It's becoming a long expensive list, might it not be better to wait for a rust free ('freer') 3rd Gen?

    Cheers

Fair comment, but, I am planning on keeping this for a while. Mechanically it is sound, low miles, and with the colour and spec that I want. If I bought another one I would end up doing this anyway, so it makes sense to me to do it all in one go then I know it is right.

Fair enough. I am sure it'll look great in the end.
Post some pics as you go.

And I want to make sure it is reliable enough to take me from Mombasa to Cape Town, via Monkey Bay/Cape Maclear!

As long as you don't give me Malawi gin, that stuff is nasty.

                    + 1

Again it is a RT or Milners kit. Not the easiest of jobs tho'.

I saw you message, I keep meaning to reply!

I'd also add, only use Toyota for Ball Joints.

I've also found that not Toyota inner tie rod ends give less movement than genuine.. I'll do a side by side comparison when I replace mine.

Wory doing CV boots too, especially if you have them all apart.

Quick Heads up, Milners supplied me with brand new Toyota lower wish bones and bushes for about £100 a side, which I thought was good. Some may recommend Poly bushes, I'm not a fan, I replaced them a few years back, I'm going back to OEM.
                        More Lift.
                        More Tyres.
                        More Engine.
