  • New truck.

After skulking round the forum for a few years I finally bought a Gen 3 SSRX Ltd. UK winters have taken their toll on the running gear and the real axle/diff. Over the next few months I will be looking to strip it down and refurb or replace parts so that it runs for another 20 years. Any tips gratefully received.

    Welcome!

Check the history, if you have had any with the truck, as some of the main jobs mentioned below might have been already done.

This would be my list of common 3rd gen issues:

Replace radiator, viscous fan , thermostat, drain all coolant and refill with quality coolant.
Check rear heater pipes for corrosion and leaks. Might need replacing or bypassing.
Drain and refill autobox oil a few times in the next few months if it does not look nice and red.
Have someone check the lower ball joints. They wear in the 3rd gen and can fail.
Check both rear hubs for leaks, evidence of diff oil around the rims and brake drums.
Starter motor might need a refurb.
Check oil in the front and rear diffs and transfer case,it might be contaminated by water. If in doubt get it all changed with fresh oil.
Service it every 5000 km with the best synthetic oil you can afford.
As for rust proofing etc i know nothing about.
    That's all from me.
    Enjoy.

Thanks for that, there is no history so it's booked in to a garage on Monday to start your list!

Once the oily bits and suspension are sorted I'll get the plastics re-sprayed, but that's probably a job for next year.

It looks quite tidy, referbing the wheels will make it look a ton better though,
