hand brake question

might seem an odd question but is the hand brake lever shaft a solid rod? I need to extend mine a bit and was thinking if it's possible to cut it and add a joiner and an extension of steel rod, or is there a inner rod?
looks like the hand grip part is fitted on with metal dowel pin
