  • Drive shaft boot changing

    Hi Guys,

Not been around for a while...

My poor old 2nd gen 4Runner has been sat unused for the last year. At the last MOT the driveshaft boot on one side had split. It was only an advisory, but I didn't want to run around anywhere with the car until I had it fixed, so as not to do more serious damage.

Now the MOT has expired and I'm going to have to move the car off the driveway soon, so I've got to get this darn boot fixed!

I've bought a set of boots off Rough Trax and I bought the manual they sell for the 4Runner. Unfortunately, the info in it about drive shafts is very limited.

This must be a common problem, does any one know the best way of taking the driveshaft out to exchange the boots?

    Thanks in advance

Thanks for that Diezel. That link is for a 3rd gen, but I did find this thread:

      http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/showthread.php?t=71734

And this one from an Australian site:

      http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/cvjoints.htm

I had a look at the driveshaft yesterday and had a look at undoing the 6 bolts holding the driveshaft to the diff, but they are ******* tight! I didn't want to push my luck and end up with rounded nuts. In the Aussie site they say about putting a spanner on the nut, then rotating the wheel until it wedges on the frame...didn't fill me with confidence. Does anyone have a fiendish plan on getting them undone?

Also, I can see that there are quite a few parts in the wheel hub to take apart, with circlips, gaskets and retaining rings. Do I need to replace these with new? I can't see a wheelhub gasket on RoughTrax, am I missing something?

Finally, once I have the driveshaft off, how does it come apart so I can get the new boot on. In the pictures they show the driveshaft in pieces, but it's not clear how they got that far...

      Thanks for your help
