  • Compatible roof rack for stock roof rails??

Good afternoon, I have a 96 Gen 3 KZN185 which has factory fitted roof rails. Is there a kit that can be bought to mount a roof rack and or safari rack onto the existing rails? I've looked online and see pics of racks fitted but can't find any for sale. Thule roof bars I've found seem to all clamp onto door shuts towards front of vehicle but I want to utilise the existing rails. Is there any other Hilux parts stockists like Roughtrax and Miner worth trying. Cheers for any advice, Tom

My system came from Roughtrax and both the explorer rack and bars were made by Thule, unfortunately it was several years ago when I bought mine and can't remember the part numbers but it's not the bars Roughtrax currently sell that's for sure.
I seem to remember the feet being a standard type but extra rectangular pins were supplied to allow them to fit the Surf.

Sorry I can't be of more help but my trucks been SORN for the last year or so and its been ages since I've bought accessories for it.
If I can find part numbers etc I'll post them up here.

Any advice or replies is a great help, I rang my local Toyota dealer today and because mine is and import finding parts is a nightmare by which I mean aftermarket parts. I'll try rough track again, did find Rhino racks do a compatible system but it's on the scary side off 400 pounds, would be cheaper to make one. Going to truel eBay etc see if I get lucky. Cheers Shalershaker 😀

          Hi,
If you want to fit a roof rack to a Gen 3, try this combo:

          Thule parts
          4700 - Rapid Tracker Foot
4715 - Other part of Foot
          761 - Bars

You will also need 8 m6 Unistrut channel nuts which fit inside the Surf roof rails and you bolt the feet down with them.
I bought a bulk box of the channel nuts a few years ago. still have a few left at £7 for a set of 9 (8 to use and 1 spare).

Hi guys, I managed to source an OEM spec roof rail set in America. Obviously out there they are 4 Runners and I'm glad as wanted to use original parts. They are rare as hen's teeth in the UK but will look great. Next will be getting a safari rack to fit to roof bars. If your looking for aftermarket parts for the Surf try American eBay and type 4 Runner parts and your vehicles year. Got everything from hub spacers to crystal led headlight units. Cheers for the tips and advice, and keep on Surfing (how cliche) haha

I was looking a lot for a roof rail for my jeep, I know that on eBay are just only the original which cost around 250$ , it is too expensive and I prefer to get and secondhand one or a similar which is also compatible with jeep wrangle. My brother send me this site toolsspecialist.com and advised me to check the article about roof rails, I find it very useful and there I have ordered a qualitative roof rail which perfectly fit on my roof.I saw there some roof for 4 runners and Hilux. You can find it useful as well just check the link .

                  Hello Folks,

                  I am new to the forum, and actually don't own a Surf any more, but do have some bits that some of you guys might be interested in;

I have two sets of roof bars that utilise the standard rails on the KZN185 for sale on ebay, but drop me a line if you want more info.

I also have a set of brake shoes for the same vehicle circa 1995 / 6.

I also have a tow hitch drop plate if anyone is interested.

Please feel free to contact me !

                  Many thanks

                  Ian

I've had good success with the Rhino Rack kit - website links below:
                    cross bar - #RB1250B - Heavy Duty Bar (Black 1250mm) | (rhinorack.com)
                    feet - #CADDY04 - RLTF Leg (for Canopy with existing track) (x2) | (rhinorack.com)
                    channel nuts - #N003-BP - M8 Channel Nut (4 Pack) | (rhinorack.com)

you can buy these in kits of 1, 2 or 3 bars which might save some $$.
