  • Quick question for off roaders

I've not quite figured this out yet, my new truck has those manual locking hubs fitted, I'm a little confused on there benefit, a Google search suggests to me that they lock the wheels to the axle, is that the same as locking the diff?
    Yes it's a V8, don't you know I'm loco?

    No, not the same.

Manual hubs allow the wheels to "freewheel" under normal driving conditions, reducing wear and tear on the CV joint and front diff, also "potential" for an extra MPG or 2.

If you go off road you need to lock the hubs to "attach" them to the drive shafts, If you do then need to engage for wheel drive the front diff will turn the shafts and wheels at the same time.

If you leave them unlocked, you only end up driving the shafts from the diff and are still in two wheel drive.

    Hope this helps.

So even if I turned 4wd on, I won't actually have it till I lock the hubs? How did this work on my old surf that had the stock hubs? Cos I didn't have to lock anything when I turned the 4wd on that

      Cheers

The stock Surfs have a splined flange bolted to the hubs, which connect to the splines on the drive shafts. As stated above manual hubs allow unlocking so the drive shafts and CV are not turning all the time. Always lock hubs before using 4WD.

OK so can I leave the hubs locked when I'm in 2nd say when I may be engaging and disengaging 4wd every few minutes? Or do I have to get out and lock and unlock the hubs everytime?

Thanks for your replies so far but I jus found a tidy website that explained everything with pretty colourful diagrams

I'm glad I don't have to hop out the truck every few minutes to unlock them when disengaging 4wd, I might break sweat lol

If you have an open diff (not LSD) and want to have more traction with RWD only, look into an auto locking rear diff:
                        http://www.powertrax.com/index.php/products/lock-right

I have one in my Surf and think it's one of the best mods I've done. I think it also saved my mum a few weeks ago when she took a wrong turn on private property and ended up on some boggy grass trying to back out. Got into trouble for having ruined the grass but didn't get stuck. She forgot about the manual hubs.
I ended up paying 160 quid for the unit and 100 quid shipping from USA back in 2010.
                        Oh Nana, what's my name?

If it's factory standard then the front will be an open diff. You probably don't want an LSD in the front as an LSD is there to try and restrict or prevent the wheels from turning at different speeds on that axle. And the front wheels will always turn at different speeds unless you're going in a dead straight line

Toyota LSDs are known to be a bit on the weak side from what I found so if you fit bigger tyres, you might probably find one wheel spinning and a little bit of power going to the wheel with grip. That was my experience anyway

You have an SSR G with the fishnet Recaros? I still think theyre more comfy than my 2015 bmw. Theyre not comfy to sleep in whatsoever though!
Same Recaros as an Escort RS2000 - I'm surprised my truck hasn't been broken into over night and the front seats stolen TBH.
