GEM does full recovery cover for £35 (if accessed via moneysupermarket). I had two French cars before, out of which my 97 Pug 306 spent most of the year in various garages with anything from water pump to full engine damage and GEM recovered it every time, about 10 times in total. They also recovered Xantia and Passat I was transporting to London for sale last year. They don't have limit of call outs or miles per type of recovery like AA or RAC does, they don't care who's the owner of the car as long as you were driver or passenger, they don't moan or find excuses not to send recovery if you simply run out of fuel or puntured tyre. Without a doubt the best £35 I spend every year, even though my current two cars just don't break. It covers everything - roadside assistance, recovery of vehicle up to 6 people and trailer, if towing to any destination, home assistance (limit of £60), recovery following theft or vandalism, illness etc.
The only downside is pay and claim system and £60 claim limit if you need recovery specifically after collision, but I believe that's the case with most recovery services.

If you want a cheap inspection on a car you are thinking of buying and the seller will let you, take it for an MOT!

I got my breakdown recovery through my insurance broker. They use Europ Assist (www.europ-assistance.co.uk)and charge 60 quid for the year, this includes homestart, relay and all the trimmings if you`re abroad in Europe. A very comprehensive package for a very good price. Despite having the policy for over a year though, I haven`t had to use it yet . When I originally took out the cover I checked out the Europ Assist web site, the broker price was cheaper than the online purchase price.

        Regards

I got the basic inspection free with the loan I took out from them, and knew nothing about surfs at the time.

I paid an extra fee to have a more thorough inspection.
