4 wheel drive

ive got a 1993 2.4 surf, and was just wondering if im using the 4 wheel drive stick properly, only had it a week, and know of the horror stories about driving in 4 wheel drive.. next to my auto selector is a stick, it has on it the words... L4- top
N- middle
H- bottom

im driving in "H" as this is how it was when i picked it up.... is this correct? ive read the info on this forum, but got kinda confused??? any help or advice... cheers rob.

H - high ratio - used most of the time
N - neutral
L4- low ratio - off road/towing at low speeds

4wd button on stick to engage/disengage 4wd - best left to loose and rough surfaces as will probably 'wind up' when cornering on tarmac- may take a few seconds to come on and go off - green indicator light on dash should come on and youll hear a click/clunk when it does

Is it just me, or does anyone else have trouble resisting the temptation to push the 4WD button while driving? My thumb is constantly hovering over that button...

"Don't drink that bathwater!"

"Stop playing with that!"

"Don't open bottles with your teeth!"

"Don't run with your hands in your pockets!"

I always want to do what I'm not supposed to do...
