  • It's died

Nina was out in the truck today and has just called me to say it won't go anywhere.

On arrival it revs like mad and barely moves, but when it does it jerks in bursts but is hardly going anywhere. She said she couldn't get above 15mph and it was juddering the whole time.

Quick inspection looks like oil is leaking from the back of the block or front of the transmission, can't tell but it's dripping off the back of the bash plate. Looks like oil rather than ATF.

We're going to get it recovered home so I can get a look at it, but I assume this is not the kickdown cable now, something more expensive than that.

    Any ideas?

    UPDATE:

Just got it home and moved it off the recovery truck (didn't pass any LRs on the way home) and I can feel it shuddering when trying to move it, there is a faintish smell of burning clutch, and I can feel it engage and disengage with juddering as this happens, lots of revs and not much movement.

I very much doubt this is a cable issue anymore.

Has anyone got an auto transmission (preferably from a truck without a towbar...) and maybe a transmission jack I can borrow, and maybe a spare pair of hands, some expertise.......

there are 2 seals in the bell housing 1 is for the torque converter and the other is the rear crank seal both involve the removal of the autobox.. If you are doing the box do the crank seal as well as it will be a sh1t if you put it all back together and it then leaks.

Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately, we are miles away in Warwickshire.

If anyone fancies making a weekend out of it, we've got an annexe/spare room with it's own shower room, loads of space for tents and can do nice food!

pretty soon mate, it's got the cages in for the dogs, so Nina can't do any agility until it's sorted, and the Paj isn't really a long term option. Ideally the weekend after this one, that's next weekend isn't it....knobber....

Any ideas on the cost of getting the tranny here?

                Hiya
Having just bought a gen3 with a pink milkshake I have spent the last few days researching gearboxes and transmissions. Lots of info on the web!!
Long and short of it, the auto gearboxes are the same on all the surfs, a340f, there is a guy on the 4runner forum that changed the driveshaft over and put a a340e box into his 4runner

And a340es are everywhere ..... In a jeep, all sorts of toyotas, pajeros

Also loads of info on YouTube about toyota a series rebuilds

Let me know if you want a chat!!
I'll be taking mine out for a rebuild following the ipt guys on YouTube and getting a rebuild kit for the US

Thanks for all that, it's great and yes, may very well need a chat.

I'll have a look around on YouTube first to see what I'm dealing with.

                  Cheers!

Unfortunatly I don't have a tranny here, and before you say it, no I will not wear one of Shirleys skirts and plaster my face in make up.
also I don't think im gonna be able to get up to you for a few weeks, best thing to do is remove your box and transfer case and get a second hand box should cost no more than £150.00 delivered to your door, there are plenty of autos being broke. To make things easier on yourself remove the transfer case seperatly, makes the auto box a lot lighter.if you need me to talk you through stuff give me a call mate.

Cheers Mark, or should I say, Maria?????

I'll give you a shout later in the week, email me your number and when you'll be free so I can write it all down.

Are you saying that I'll be able to take it off in bits and be OK on my own?

I'll find a breaker and see what deal I can get.

                      Thanks again, and speak soon.

Ive lifted the whole transmission in on my own, bit of a struggle but I did manage it, jack truck up , put on axle stands, blocked gearbox up so that it was a foot or so off the ground, put trolley jack under transfer case , I slid under gearbox and lifted it into position whilst trolley jack took most of the weight under transfer case, You have a four post ramp. Lift truck up about 3 foot or so, get trolley jack or axle stand under box or transfer case. Undo bolts, lift truck up leaving box behind. Or split transfer box to lighten the load, you need to do this anyway to refit your transfer case to new auto box.hope that makes sense.

Yes it does, cheers. Would my tool chest take the weight, Edd China style?

Yea it would just protect the top of it and use a couple of bits of wood as chocks. Also go easy on the electrical connectors they go brittle over time.
