Having just bought a gen3 with a pink milkshake I have spent the last few days researching gearboxes and transmissions. Lots of info on the web!!
Long and short of it, the auto gearboxes are the same on all the surfs, a340f, there is a guy on the 4runner forum that changed the driveshaft over and put a a340e box into his 4runner

And a340es are everywhere ..... In a jeep, all sorts of toyotas, pajeros

Also loads of info on YouTube about toyota a series rebuilds

Let me know if you want a chat!!
I'll be taking mine out for a rebuild following the ipt guys on YouTube and getting a rebuild kit for the US
I may be able to get an A340E from a Supra, so if I understand this correctly, I keep the drive shaft from mine and attach to the E, or take the shaft from the donor vehicle and tranny?

what about a soarer gearbox? plenty of them on eBay and cheap as
or what about an automatic box from an LN130 or the 3.0 as the internet wisdom seems to be that they'll be a straight fit too

in fact there's a gen3 gearbox on eBay presently but its a touch expensive

The LN130 has the transfer and transmission levers the other way around though, or am I that dim that I'm missing something?

I'm looking at Supra/Soarer breakers, and a possible company that will do it for me for not silly money. Been quoted £1150 + VAT today....mental.

Looking at the A340 on the thread you sent me, then looking at a Soarer G/B they are not the same outside. I wonder if it's just the guts that are? One on ebay has the code in the photo and it's not A340 it's A3040.....don't want to risk spending a chunk of cash on something that won't fit.

                      you reckon?

                      have a look at this
                      http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Toyota-Soa...item2edb662475

                      and compare with this
                      http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1615583559...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

(there are cheaper soarer boxes than that, but that eBay seller has got good pictures)

I think there's a guy in Utoxetter with a soarer box for 60 quid on eBay

Now I can't say for certain - cos I haven't done this myself yet - but the soarer box looks the same bar the input shaft needing changed over as per the guy in Hawaii on the 4runner site and possibly the bellhousing to be changed over to the original. The soarer tailshaft will be ditched in favour of the gens transfer box again the 4runner site explains this

This seems doable for a cheap fix but will be a step into the unknown to a certain extent. Or you can fork out 1100+ and be certain

in fact that's an even better set of pictures of the soarer box
90 quid for the one in utoxetter

I stand corrected, code for the A340E is 30-40-LE....http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyot...smission#A340F but these are 5 speed, not the 3-4 plus O/D on the Surf...

I'll go for that or one just like it....cheers for all your help.
