May be an incompatibility issue....try microsofts website for link to see compatibility on

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx

or try searching in technet (major site for developers)

    http://www.technet.com or
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;kbhowto for the search engine

Hes not running a firewall that could be set to block possible outbound traffic.

Things like FTP run on POrt 21 etc.. as opposed to HTTP traffic which runs on Port 80

            Geoff.

Hi Geoff..not downloaded XP SP2 yet..but I know that Microsoft have changed the way the firewall works under Microsoft in that they now have it configured to be on by default.

Sorry cant be of any more assistance, but try the help file and type in firewall...this could need knocking off and use the McAfee Firewall suite to control things

Heres a way to check the firewall log on windows XP1..may be the same for XP2..this might provide some assistance in whats going on

To view the security log file
            Open Network Connections
Click the connection for which Internet Connection Firewall is enabled, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings
On the Security Logging tab, under Log file options, under Name, click Browse.
Scroll to pfirewall.log, right-click pfirewall.log, and then click Open.
Double-click the log file to open it, and view the contents.
            Notes

To open Network Connections, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network Connections.
The default name for the firewall log is pfirewall.log and the location is in the Windows folder.
If the maximum allowable size for pfirewall.log is exceeded, the information that the log file contains is written to a new file and saved as pfirewall.log.1. The new information is saved in pfirewall.log.

                Try the obvious stuff first.

M$ being security focussed this year... settings in security centre. That lovely new icon that appears as a task tray icon, and isn't competing with any anti-virus personal firewalls or WinXP firewall settings. Also check that is hasn't messed around with the security settings for the browser. Previous settings may have been custom, and are now set back to what M$ think is best?

                Hope that helps...

                  Pop-up Blocker

Just been reading a little and this may be a the problem...
                  Using Pop-up Blocker

When you install SP2, Pop-up Blocker is turned on in Internet Explorer and set to the medium setting, which means it will block most automatic pop-ups. The default settings for the pop-up blocker allow you to see pop-ups that are opened when you click a link or button on a Web site. Pop-up Blocker will also play a sound and show the Information Bar when a pop-up is blocked. You can adjust these settings so that Pop-up Blocker works the way you want it to.

                  To change Pop-up Blocker settings

                  1. Open Internet Explorer.

                  2. On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings

If you want to see pop-up windows from a specific Web site, type the address (or URL) of the site in the Address of Web site to allow box, and then click Add.

                  Pop-up Blocker Settings window

Tip To temporarily allow a site to display pop-ups, click the Information Bar when it notifies you that a pop-up has been blocked. Then click Temporarily Allow Pop-ups.

To block pop-ups even if they are launched when you click a link or button on a Web site

                  1. Open Internet Explorer.

                  2. On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.

                  3. Select the High setting in the box near the bottom of the dialog box.

Note If you want to see pop-ups that are blocked when you have this setting turned on, hold down the CTRL key while the window opens.

                  Top of page
                  Troubleshooting Pop-Up Blocker
If you've installed SP2 and you still see pop-ups in Internet Explorer, try the possible solutions below.

                  • Make sure Pop-up Blocker is turned on: Pop-up Blocker is turned on by default, but someone may have turned it off.

                  To turn on Pop-up Blocker

                  1. On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker.

                  2. Click Turn on Pop-up Blocker.

                  • Rid your system of spyware: If you get similar pop-up windows no matter what sites you visit or even if you're not on the Web at all, you could have spyware, adware, or other software on your computer that's launching pop-ups. To stop these pop-ups, you will have to identify the software, then remove it or change its settings to stop it from launching pop-ups. To learn more about this read How to Protect Your Computer from Spyware and Adware.

                  • Some windows are not blocked: Pop-up Blocker is smart enough to not block pop-up windows that you open deliberately by clicking a link—for example, if you were on a travel reservation site and you clicked a link to open a pop-up window containing your confirmation details, this pop-up window would not be blocked because you opened it intentionally. Also, Pop-up Blocker will not block some pop-ups with certain types of animated content or pop-ups from Web sites that are in two Web content zones: Local intranet or Trusted sites. To learn more about security zones, see Working with Internet Explorer 6 Security Settings

Check also on Exceptions or opening ports...heres the microsoft page

OK, this post is coming from Internet Explorer on XP with SP2 installed, and all IE settings are at default (I use FireFox as my browser, so I haven't bothered making any settings changes to IE), and it all went fine - if you can read this.

This is actually by design of Norton. They've made their products so they can't be monitored by other apps - the theory being that if Windows can check on their status then so can a 'nasty'. They did release a patch for NAV2004 that allowed it to be monitored by the new Security Centre, but have since pulled that patch and will be re-releasing it later this month apparently.
