  • Newbie from Gatwick

    Hi guys.

I was having a nose through Google for hints and tips as my LN130 Smurf has the common leaky fuel pump issues (didn't want to open the pump and everything go "PING") and stumbled across this site.

I live in Surrey, not too far from Gatwick Airport. Love Toyota's, always had a Supra for the last 8 years or so and bought the Surf just over a year ago. Paid £500 and she just needed the exhaust side and radiator lobbing back together and an MOT!!

She's currently got a 2" suspension lift and is sat on 33" Grizzly's.

Quiet place these days. Welcome along, and I hope you enjoy the Surf.

Just for reference though, Smurfs are blue and fictitious.
Too old to care, young enough to remember

Cheers guys. Thought it seemed slightly quiet. I'm used to the Supra forum where there are thousands of new posts a day!

Well, it would seem that the pump rebuild was a success! Just turned the key and had a fellow spanner jockey from next door pump the primer and she fired up and hasn't void herself of diesel all over my workshop floor! Happy days! Not bad considering the last time I ran her was in may!!!

As a side note, do any of you guys run them in the winter with no viscous fan? I removed mine for the entirety of last winter and she was fine. Last time I used her in may, she got a bit warm and spat all her water out!

            Haha...Benji, you crazy guy!!

Folks on here go to great lengths (gauges, bonnet scoops, electric fans...you name it) to keep these engines running a bit cooler, and what do you do?
You whip the viscous fan off...honestly!

Welcome, join in the fun !

Well ya know, I like to get a bit of warmth inside the cab at some point of my journeys other than the end!!

I've run it up tonight with no VF. Electric fan cuts in and goes off as it should, temp stays where it should and there's warmth inside, so hopefully it'll be alright. Will chuck the VF back on when the weather warms up a bit.

Is your matrix partially blocked? My truck gets so hot inside i could boil water almost!!

When i flushed the coolant system i shoved the hose down one of the heater matrix pipes and a lot of crap came out. Perhaps it would be worth you doing that and seeing if you get any crap out?

Id suggest you keep the viscous fan in place, also a service of
It (re oil) and knocking back the cut in temp is also a good idea, you should need it all year round !

Well she was running up to temp today and has zero warmth in the cab. Electric fan came in and out, but still no heat inside. It can't be air locked because I used my easy bleed. I'll stick the hose up it tomorrow and see what happens. Good news is, still no diesel on the floor!! Win!!

                    Hello & welcome Ben

Electric fan is allmost an overheating fan.
Surfs suffer very badly from air locks. Have you tried a search ?
O.E, temp gauge is pants, not accurate. Most folk fit an aftermarket gauge.

                    Congrats on repairing fuel loss.

Well she's just passed the MOT with 2 ball joints advised. All I need to do now is flush this matrix. Oh and fit the VF again.

                              Ahhh, I know Billingshurst.

Don't suppose you know of any local lanes where I can get her plastered do you?

My stock gauge seems pretty accurate to be fair. When it boiled up in may it told me it was getting warm so I could stop at home before it pushed passed the pressure cap and spat all it's water out. Head's ok, I block checked it and there's no pressurization going on...
