  • New Surf Owner

    Hi,
I've very recently bought a near perfect '96 Gen 3 after several years of old Mercedes sheds. I love the old Mercs but I keep killing them by using them as vans, so something a little more rugged was required.

I've driven a few Gen 2's and Landcruisers over the years and an awful lot of Landrovers (I've only ever been stuck in a Landrover, never in a Toyota) as a lot of my work involves building 'Big Boy's Toys' in forests or open land but always well offroad. Think huge wooden structures, walkways, stages, bars and the like.

Anyway, having been spoilt by the serenity of Merc driving, I thought I'd go for a Gen 3 SSRG. I must say I like it. I have curly hair and my hobbies include doing my nails and musicals....

Seriously, time will tell how I get on with it. I'm interested to see if it gets stuck anywhere. I can call on a Manitou to haul me out if necessary but if that does become necessary, you guys on here can hopefully get my mind right and point me in the right direction of the correct model to have to keep me mobile in often very wet, boggy conditions whilst towing trees or carrying telegraph poles on the roof.
Where do I get a roof rack for one of these?

I've read a lot of this forum and find it very informative. I hope I may be of use in the future.

    That's the introduction done.
I'll think of a daft question later.

    Triv.

      Welcome!

Not sure about carrying telegraph poles on the roof (perhaps if you slice them really thin? ), but the trucks seem up to most other things. Good luck with it and post pics.

        Hi and welcome.

My advice would be to press the 4WD button well in advance of getting into the sticky stuff, since it often takes a while to engage with the 3rd Gen. So keep it in 4WD as soon as you enter the slippery terrain.
If you feel you need more traction then use the transfer lever for H/L range and centre diff locking (if you have multi-mode).
That way I have always got out of mud and sand, even when other 4x4s were really struggling.

        Cheers

                  Thanks for the welcome guys.

                  Yes it has multimode.
Interestingly, I've found that the 4WD engages immediately if it's raining but takes a little while in the dry.
Perhaps it's a Toyota thing. It knows when it's going to be slippery.
Or, it knows if I'm going to get frizzy hair...

As for the telegraph poles on the roof. We found a Nissan Primera excellent for that work. The roof caves in nicely and as long as neither windscreen breaks, the doors still open afterwards. Not bad for 13 metre poles. Although the screens do eventually (quite soon actually) break and the doors do tend to sit at a funny angle.
Oh and it only had to last a few weeks
Oh and it was a Nissan.

                  Mines got a sunroof
Perhaps I'll look for another Primera!

I heard about The Man before I bought mine. I must take a trip over to pester him.

                        Welcome

Yeah Welcome. I bought a 3rd Gen 3.0 TD 1996 Jap Import back in May from a member here. Love it. But never tried the 4x4 switch yet. Mine has multimode too.

Hopefully it will snow soon so I can give it a go!

Post a pic so we can all have a gander!!
