  • Another one of Robs adventures! And I've broken it!

Well today we went along a well known trail that takes in a few Bomb Holes, normally used by the motor cyclists but heck what was the worst that could happen..............

It started out so well, she climbed this easily

    http://youtu.be/gQ6zhHj-SN4

So we went to bigger one with staggered rough bits, it proved difficult

So in true me Clarkson style I went with MORE POWER and this happened..

    http://youtu.be/_t6yI5Bj1mo

Now since that horrific noise!!!!! It drives fine seemingly in 4wd no nasty noises while going straight.

But with 4wd engaged, turning the steering and driving I can feel what seems to be resistance, and knock and a bang that can be felt..... I'm hoping it's not another diff!

I'm also concerned about why the wheel was flapping like that!!!

It's to wet to get under and have a poke about tonight I'll check in the morning

I used similar tactics getting my 3rd gen out of a crater... it all seemed fine and 4x4 has always worked since, but I did notice when draining the front diff fluid, a gear tooth fell out with the oil....
    More Lift.
    More Tyres.
    More Engine.

I'll get under tomorrow and check what I can but I feel
It's a ramp job to check properly!!

If you haven't bent something I'll be surprised

Well my quick look hasn't shown anything obvious! The shafts turn ok by hand, there doesn't appear to be anything bent/ loose. The Steering dampner does have a lot of fresh grease on it so perhaps that balljoint is fubar!!

I'll order one and a shaft and get it on a ramp so I can get everything hanging free.

So I managed to get to look at it properly today!!

Driving around in a clockwise circle in 4wd gives knocking and juddering that can be felt, it can be seen juddering at the diff to.

On the ramp with 4wd engaged wheel straight all seems fine.

Wheels turned you get 3 wheels spinning and the passenger wheel juddering and knocking and not wanting to turn.

It also seems to loose drive at times requiring switching to reverse to get it to move again.

I'm fearing diff so another swap is under way!!

Sounds like a broken CV joint, strip them and inspect, a lot quicker than dropping the diff.

In the 3rd vid you posted that big wobble the wheel took makes me think CV has popped. Hope so, much quicker and cheaper than a diff.

I have a spare diff anyway so if it is then it's no biggy!

I've not got time this week so left it with a mate, he's gonna drop the diff and the shafts and check it all over and advise accordingly.

                            Defo diff

The front wheels turn but the front prop doesn't turn properly or front prop turns but the front wheels don't properly.

It sometimes all turns fine, other times jams up the knocks and kicks, sometimes wheels turn but not the prop.

                            Swapping diffs tomorrow.

So the moral of the story is...........

Doing that will destroy a diff and a steering idler!!!

It will also highlight how pants the CV boots were!!!

                              All sorted now thank god!

Tune in next time for, Rob's broken something else!!
