  • Anyone using 17" rims with mud tyres?

I have been looking at wheels and tyres and wondered if many people were using 17" wheels?

I see mostly 15" rims put on the older trucks but there are a lot of more modern ones on 17s and the tyre choice isnt to bad, OK they are more expensive and you get less sidewall for a given tyre height but as I'm not going to be rock crawling or doing massive jumps a bigger rim and lower sidewall should make for more stability on road and it doesn't seem to harm the newer trucks.

Am i missing something, or is it just that the extra expense means that us older truck owners haven't caught up yet and are happy with 15"s?

Sorry but my 2.4 would struggle on 17"

Think Vince rolls on 20" rims

You could still have the same overall tyre diameter with a 17" rather than a 15" you only get 1" less sidewall between the rim and the ground and I'm thinking as I'm not likely to do much more than green laneing and some pay and play days (don't want to smash up my truck) I'm not really gonna miss that inch.

Thought it might be a bit unusual and stand out a bit, however being new to Surfs and large tyres I'm checking to see if there are issues I haven't thought of.

I have had lots of modified stuff and while i don't mind doing things for looks I really hate stuff that isn't functional as well so while i reckon the bigger rims would look good i don't want to fit them if they will ruin the truck off or on road.

You can get Steel modulars in 17", various widths and offsets so it's not like it's a weird idea.

I reckon i'm going to try it, might put cheapish tyres on first though in case i hate it!

              these are 17x8 apparently.

Don't think anyone has said it's weird , yet.
Might be worth checking that the wheel tyre combo and offset will be of a similar dimensions to what you have already as you may get the tyre rubbing on full lock or even on suspension travel.

The picture you have posted doesn't exactly show a tyre with a low aspect tyre wall, plus the wheel tyre combo shown isn't in a 2nd gen wheel arch.

Might be worth doing some more checking before splashing out.

                  I'm going to fit a 33" tyre still, it's just that it'll have a 17" rim in it instead of a 15"
