  • New Guy With Issues.....

    Hey guys,

I finally made it in!! Thanks to Admin for sorting the issue! I'm hoping you can help me though!!

I've trawled the web and I'm still at a loss!!

I have a 91 KZN130, with a 2" body lift 2" monroe suspension lift and sitting on 35x12.5 tyres! Here she is

I took it offroading over the weekend as you can see and I've developed some issues

I have 2 problems they may be connected, they may not be!!

The front diff is leaking on the drivers side I assume this is just the seal so have ordered a new one. Here's a pic.

Now I can move the shaft up and down a little, and it feels a wee bit loose.

The second is the more worrying issue!!!

I had a nasty knock/ rattle when going over anything other than perfectly smooth roads. I searched and I got the impression it may be the ARB or droplinks so I removed this and retested.

I also read about the exhaust, checked the heat shield, it was close so whipped that off and the noise is still there.

It litterally feels like something is broken/ loose and rattling about. It happens when going over anything less than perfectly flat tarmac and seems to be less slightly less apparent when conering, accerlating hard, or braking.

I ran it into my mates garage and he is going to look. Yesterday we checked 4WD operation running figure 8's on gravel and there are no nasty diff noises.

I'm scrathing my head!! Any ideas on where to start looking??

Well new shocks go on today so lets hope that cures the noise and then I can address the diff issue!

If its a metalic sounding rattle like driving over a loose manhole cover you might check the bronze bushes in your front hubs. Mine does this. I spent ages chasing this noise thinking something was seriously wrong.

Balljoint noise, they can get really worn?

I took this off of my truck, wee bit torn up.

          Welcome!!
I had a horrendous noise from mine, sounded like metal finger nails being scraped across a metal blackboard, if you get my drift.
Turned out to be a bit of flint stuck between the disk and disk back plate, also gained from off roading.
The noise would come and go similar to how you described.
          Might be worth a look....

            Thanks guys,

            Well it wasn't the shocks!!

Best way to describe the noise is metal on metal banging. Like it would if something was loose or broken and hitting into something else. It's not a quiet noise and can be felt in the footwell and steering.

It got a lot worse when we removed the arb!!

It happens going straight and turning, in 2wd and 4wd.

It happens all the time really, only on glass smooth roads does it not do it.

As the diff was leaking and there is movement on the drive shaft I've ordered a used diff to see if that cures it.

After that I guess it can only be a bush.

Get the front wheels off the ground and check all the steering linkage.
Check steering box and idler for movement. Check bushes on steering rod.
Give the wheels a waggle top to bottom, look for bearing wear.

Info on changing idler bushes here if you need it.

So a few days have passed and he thinks he has found the noise....

As Kerrsurf said ball joints shot to bits!!

New ones go on today! I'll report back

On the plus side everything else steering/ suspension wise seems to be in top condition for it's age!

                    It's all fixed!

Ball joints!!! all 4 were rubbish but driver lower was totally screw not unlike Kerrsurf's photo.

So as soon as I picked it up last night it was straight out to try and break it again....... We didn't, the Surf performed well.

Now to find a rear locker!!
