Look on the back of a 1st Gen Surf, it'll say "Hilux Surf Wagon"

I think thats basicaly what it was, a Hi Lux pickup with an estate body on. what we know as an estate, is known in most other countries as a station wagen.

"station wagon". Favoured by the Talibans.

The differnce between and estate, station wagon and a shooting brake is to do with the way the back door opens - the surf is technically a station wagon, but this is not a term often used in the UK.

Yep think that a shooting brake has a side opening door, estate, lift up tailgate, station wagon drop down tailgate. Basically I think that the terms really relate what they were designed to be used for - Station wagon was for picking people up from the railway station back in the days of not many people having cars - Shooting brake was for that purpose - for hunting parties.

Station wagon generally came from the term "depot Hack" which was used to define a vehicle used for carrying people and luggage. Also known as Suburbans or carryalls (GM still use the name Suburban on the big 4x4 long wheelbase estate).

End of anorac hour. I'll get back to trainspotting now.

              Cheers
