  • 3rd Gen worth the bunce?

I've read that the 3rd Gen engine is the same lump as the 2nd gen 3.0L

I am considering buying a 3rd Gen but not sure if it would be a waste of money,

would it be just like driving my 2nd gen? I guess I need 3rd gen owners to convince me its worth me spanking the money on a 3rd gen!!

do the 3rd gens suffer from the same slow window motors, dodgy switches and a back window that likes to play up?

I guess I'm thinking a 3rd gen as I like my surf and looking at L200's or range rovers I would have to spend a big chunk more for a higher mileage car.

    Your thoughts please!

Rangey or l200 V a Toyota, it is a no brainer, Toyota every time.

Looking at what I could get for the same money, I agree with you. I just have a small worry that It wont feel any different to my Gen 2, I wasn't it to at least feel like im driving a newer truck!

I can always stop and open the tailgate to remind myself I guess!

Coil springs all round, steering rack not steering box, upgraded chassis.
On some an upgraded transfer box. Its bigger inside noticeable so in the back.

I still like the 2nd gen but I have had two 3rd gens one diesel one petrol and enjoyed them both.

Cheers for the advice Yoshie, I've made some enquiries. Will let you know if I snare one!

As Yoshie said plus the 3rd gen is much more comfortable to drive, more car-like.
It has approximately six inches more wheelbase than the 2nd gen, slightly larger rear cargo area, you can still open the rear door if the window motor packs up and they have a 'proper' handbrake.

Cheers for the input, I think the gen2 is a good truck, but it does feel like it needs a bit of refining. I might have to take the plunge.

Bushwhacker, what's the score on tranny coolers on the gen3? Is it the same system so same solution?

It's a stacked plate design in the 3rd gen rads instead of the tube type in the 2nd gen, but still too small IMO.
The radiators are aluminium on the 3rd gen which dissipate the heat more efficiently, but an extra cooler would still help keep the temps under control.

Go for it, but, whatever you do, no green or orange bash plates this time...

I've never had a problem with any of the electrics on mine in 3yrs of ownership. rear window works well, sunroof doesn't like cold weather though, goes a bit slow but still works. It's fine when weather warms up again.

Comfy on my regular drives to scotland, been to south of spain in it, quiet enough, does about 26mpg on a run.

Gearbox is fine, engine/geabox never overheated, takes me on off-road play days as well, did Avon Dassett at the weekend didn't break too much lol

Only problem i've had with it is cracked head which had been going over a long period of time till it properly went so replaced head and valves/camshaft myself and all is well. Easy to work on.

I never had a 2nd Gen so can't compare but i love this 3rd and would have another later model so i can convert my current steed for more off-road biased duties.

You could probably do with test driving a couple before you splash the cash.
                      Now it's time to play!

                        Yellow?! White?!

I think I'd leave the 3rd gen as it is, I only did it because I thought the burgundy/grey needed brightening up!

Tricker 4wd on the 3rd gen can be used on a wider range of surfaces. No issues with electrics on mine. You don't need to drop the window every time you open the tailgate as you do on the 2nd gen, which saves the motor.

Yes, much easier to explain to women how to use the 4wd in a 3rd Gen.
