I am now worried.. I actually paid for the car today.. i paid £1500 for the truck, a wired in CB radio and 7 spare wheels (4 with road tyres and 3 with off road tyres new spare 31 on the boot too) and i did a bit of research on the old man emu suspension and TJM winch bumper and winch etc and thought that worst case scenario I could get a fair chunk of my cash back by breaking her if necessary.

I took it out for a spin and she was smooth as silk.. everything seemed to work just fine.. electrics, door fobs, air con etc etc. 4WD engaged fine (i only went back and forth a tiny bit in a straight line though) The guy did say that his son had been off roading on Salisbury plains a few times and that the only time the 4WD had been engaged was when off road.

She started on the button, no smoke or anything.. no knocks or rattles.. the steering seemed precise and no noise on full lock or anything. The gearbox was super smooth, no jerky gear changes or holding too long before changing up or down. Looking underneath she was pretty clean.. certainly no crumbly rusty bits on her.. there was a touch of rust on the bottom of the drivers door but none on the sills or door jams or cross members or axles etc.

I am committed now I guess.. how can i tell if there has been any axle wind damage caused by running different sized tyres?

    Thanks for your help
    Guess you're committed now.
I would get the tires swapped so that you have the same size, which ever way you decide to go 31's or 33's just not both.
You should be able to sell the "spares" on fairly easily.
Drop the oil out of the diffs and the transfer case and see if you much in the way of metallic particles, either way then you will know the oil at least is ok.
If you are planning on any off roading have a look at getting some extended diff breathers.
Salisbury Plain is well worth the trip, especially if you are not too far away.
Plenty on here are willing to help out if you need any help.

Fingers crossed the truck will give years of service.

Doors wouldn't worry just get some matching ones without rust off a breaker

My thoughts exactly... At 1500.. it was a bit of a punt with all the extras she has. I bought her to have a bit of muddy fun in and the reality is that she will be full of bumps and bruises in the near future...

I will of course take everyone's advice stick the same size tyres on each corner and am thinking that i would go with 33s. Just out of interest would I need to do anything other than a 1 or 2" body lift (combined with the existing suspension lift) to accommodate 33s at the front?

I just checked out the plains on google.. looks awesome.. it is about an hour from me so I will defo be vising there in the near future... I am in leafy old Oxfordshire and it seems that the posh ladies and gentlemen here don't like people messing about in motors so no real opportunities for green laning round here..
