It will run but not very efficiently and will get worse. What about a compression test? Was that done? Thought I and maybe someone else suggested that.

well if combustion gasses are entering the block its not going to do it much good. Whether it could heat the oil enough to crack the cylinder head I don't know but I wouldn't rule it out.
You will have to take the engine out anyway to do the rings which is going to cost. But even if you bought another engine you don't know its history so you may end up with another can of worms. Personally unless I had a very good reason to keep it I would cut my losses.

Yeah, you may well be spot on with that Rob. Only thing is, that ive recently spent money on importing the surf to estonia- time & money.. Plus im not permitted to import another surf (from UK) for two years. My only reason for maybe wanting to keep it. Just for the license plate really.
Just out of interest, anyone know how many hours it would take a mechanic to fit new rings, and give a general 'clean' up? Its €20 an hour for a good mechanic here, so I wouldnt rule it out.

The mechanic says that there is a oil leak somewhere, which would only get discovered once cleaned. I also wouldnt really know what im looking at to fix it.. Again, a good idiots guide to the surf would be well handy.

Something step-by-step would be sweet! Would be a job (hobby!) for next summer I guess.

Give it a read and see what you think...you can save some cash just by removing the engine yourself....
